if i disconect the rear sway bar and put OME shocks on the back of my 99DII with air suspension it should free up some travel. do you run into any problems with over extending the air bags or can they just keep flexing like coil springs up front?

Are you talking about using OME shocks with out lifting the truck?
If so, you should not have a problem with over extending the air bag, as far as i know(However, i have no real experience with lifting a air bag equiped D2). However, I would be concerned that you will lose compression, and you would be using your shocks as bumpstops.

in case it is needed - i have OME mediums up front and i lifted the rear 1" by mounting the sensor on the control arm up an inch higher

Frank, the airbags should be able to handle the "stretch" when you remove the rear sway bar. The standard OME shocks are slightly longer than the stock shocks but should stop the axle before you rip out your air bags. I personally don't have a lot of faith in "should, might, maybe, etc" so I put in rovertym spacers for the air bags. This gives enough extra space that I feel confident I won't rip out the air bags.

The biggest problem isn't the air bags though. When I removed my sway bars to test things out, I found that my ABS sensor lines are really tight at full drop. Brake lines seem OK but the ABS lines were questionable so I left the sway bars attached for now. I would recommend removing the sway bar at home, jacking the truck up and seeing how everything fits when you drop your wheels the full length of the shocks.

Just my .02 cents.

Rick is right. But the OME shocks are about 1" longer and without the Rovertym spacers you are really pushing the limits to the airbags and you run the risk of tearing them in the rear part of the airbag near the bottom. Try jacking it up in the driveway and you'll see what I'm talking about. The ABS and Brake lines will be the next limiting factor with the RTE SLS spaces and OME installed. I run that configuration right now (with ACE) and I'm okay until I try and extend the rear. At that point the brake lines and the ABS lines are pushed. That's my next project to deal with right before I remove the airbags in place for coils :)
