charles,
@ the airport we use Streamlight Stingers, I know it's not a maglite, but they're smaller and have cool piggyback quick chargers. check the site, just as another option. not as much candle power as the mag. but bright enough to see the tail of a 767 at midnight.

Hey Man, I just thought I would give you my info on the 2, as I own both.

I carry a stinger made by streamlight on my duty belt at work. It is a small enough light it can be on me at all times, and I worked nights for 5 years, it saw its fair share of abuse and was incredible.

I was however issued by my police dept, the rechargeble Maglight. It has seen 7 years of abuse, dropped from tall places and hit things i care not to talk about. It even fended off a wild rottwiler dog 2 summers ago.

The two lights both a re excellent products. I personally like the 2 clips you can get to mount the recharger above the subwoofer on the rear door.

just my 2 cents, i think size and use are the main things.

I agree with "surefire fan"

If you are going to put that kind of money into a light, go with the SureFire. SureFire makes the best lights available. See the "SureFire" thread in Gen-Non Tech

yes i to have used the recharable mag light, it works its nice, but the Stramlight is hands down better. they make an awesome mini rechargable that i carried on my belt for several years and have one in the Rover.

I switched from a maglight to a streamlight. The Streamlight is lighter, smaller and brighter. I bought mine from a Bass Pro shop for $75 (includes charger) and It's permanently mounted in my vehicle as well.

My .02 cents worth.

oh i guess i should mention that i also got to carry the surefire for a time, its light output was fair but the reflector capacity was a bit weak and the recharging system was awkward and didn't allow for any convenience. dollar for dollar, again the streamlight is the better buy.

oh! forgot to mention before that the Streamlights use a xenon bulb not a halo.
the light is white, not yellow.

how about this:

X5 LED Flashlight

just bought this flashlight today for myself and as a gift to a couple of buddies...it very bright...
on a personal note its made of a fairly thick/heavy metal...so the weight in your hand makes it feel sturdy..not cheap/light plastic...anyway it can be seen from far away and can illuminate a large area...it runs 15-20 hours per set of batteries....and here is my favorite part...can be used down to 150' in the water!!! AWESOME!!!
thought i could share...
peace...and a MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!!!

...or whatever you would like to celebrate...

Jess,

it is a cool flashlight - i never thought about that, but indeed LEDs can work at the sea floor without a risk of getting crushed.

however... i've done some research on LEDs (and still have a box full of super-bright white and amber ones), and they don't seem to be able to beat xenon bulbs - YET. Mostly, it is a form-factor thing - a single LED is as large as a bulb (or close to it), and while more efficient than a incandescent bulb, it provides less power. For the large part, this is because the only way these LEDs cool down (they have to) is along their pins. You could crank out a lot more light from the same LED, but only in a short pulse - anything longer than 10-50 milliseconds, and it melts down.

FWIW, I have LED back-up lights on my 68 Wagoneer - they look cool, but nowhere close to a regular even 6W bulb in light output.
