Hello, I am new to the group and Land Rovers. I just dropped my 1999 D1 into Land Rover Manhattan for some warranty work. I dealt with Benjamin Leung. So far the initial impression is positive. Ben was nice and paid attention to the details of my warranty issues. He also admitted some of the issues are relatively common. The truck is in for: Drive line lash. There is a fairly strong thud in the shift from first to second if you let off the gas right before the shift. Oil leak Rattling noise. This seems like a heat shield. Some corrosion by the rear doors. Rear tailgate rattles over sharp bumps. Drivers seat has fore and aft play. Drivers door is a little difficult to open. The front windows somtimes click during closing. Cigarette lighter does not work. A hum/static sound from the rear speaker when the radio volume is turned down. So here are the questions. How many of these are common problems? Which would you watch the closest? The corrosion and drive line lash concern me the most at the moment. Is there anything else I should be looking out for? Has anyone dealt with Land Rover Manhattan or Ben? Thanks in advance. Brian |

All listed are common, among others not listed. The driveline thud is common, and probably the one that there's not much to be done for.... check u-joints, but assuming they're sound, it'll be okay... Oil leaks, they're common enough. Keep the fluids topped off is easier, and, many thousands of dollars have been spent trying to fix Rover leaks to no avail... Rattling, could be anything. Cats would be the most expensive rattle to fix, but if under warranty, not a big deal. Corrosion, well, some do. Use the waranty if it happens. Rear door and drivers door need some adjustment...the rear door needs to be snugged into the latch a bit, the drivers door needs to be adjusted so it isn't sticking. Driver's seat needs to be tightened. Sounds like someone tried to adjust it to get more leg room and didn't get the bolts back tight. The window's popping could be a sign of an imminenet regulator failure. Keep an eye on it, and be prepared. Lucas electrics: My guess is that the socket is grounding out someplace behind the dash, but, it could be the socket itself. The speaker, similar, something might have developed a short.... Neither would really be fun to chase down..... Good luck! -L |

I just spoke with Ben Leung at Land Rover Manhattan. They are still working on a few things. Ben was nice enough to get the adjuster clips on the head light done for free. They are still looking at the rattle. They are not sure how they want to fix it. They are going to look into the corrosion by the rear door when the factory rep comes in. Ben said that this may not happen until January. He is also looking into upgrading my loaner from a Freelander to a Discovery. Overall, Ben and Land Rover have treated me well. I will hold final judgement until I get the truck back with the work complete. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!! Brian |

Brian, I have delt a lot with LR Manhattan...I liked them better when they were owned by BMW and in the BMW building but so far the Ford version has been fine. I've met Ben, and he seems nice, but I always deal with Ed Beck. I started with Ed over at BMW, and I only deal with him now. When I first got my truck it had and "issue" that LR had a hard time fixing (finding)...I picked up the truck one Friday afternoon and by that eve the problem was back...I was so pissed, that I wasn't going to wait till Monday to tell them. At 9:00pm I called Ed's voice mail and expressed my "thoughts", expecting him to get it Monday morning...at 10:05pm he called me back, angry at his staff and very appologetic to me. I was impressed...showed up first thing Monday and was "fixed" by the afternoon. Carl |
