a) familiarity; they don't know them, so they don't realize that they're easy
b) parts sourcing; they're foreign, and not Jap, so they know that the local parts house probably won't have it in stock, have to special-order
c) prejudice; a lot of people have the concept that all Rovers are really expensive, driven by snooty people who piss on others... people don't grasp the concept of the $8k Disco that the owner can fix himself or herself.

Find a shop you're cofortable with, show them the shop manuals, get them the numbers for the Rover parts suppliers, and you'll be okay. Or, do it yourself. :)

IMHO, FWIW....

Ignorance of ease of repairs and availability of parts.

Bring 'em to me, I'll fix 'em!

In whispered voice-I break 'em real good too! Mine!

I have a local tech that will work on a majority of my problems. I had him just go out and take a look at it. After a few minutes he didn't look so confused. I told him that the engine is just an old Buick small block. The only thing that he wont touch are the swivel housings and the wheel bearings. Has always done fine work. Just look around you might get lucky.

I was at the shop I used to take my volvo to and saw a disco in one of the bays, so I said to the service writer "I didn't know you worked on land rovers" his response "only when we have to".
