I am supposed to leave for a trip tomorrow morning and am having terrible electrical issues. 1997 D1 with 82K. I did a keyword search to avoid posting an already "beaten to death" thread but I am now panicking. The battery is being drained in about 6-8 hrs. I placed a charger on the battery and got enough juice to start the truck. I took the Disco to Autozone and had the battery and alt. tested. Everything tested out OK. Brought the truck home and parked in the garage overnight. The next day the battery was dead. One question, when I placed the charger on the battery, after a while the alternator felt quite warm considering the engine was ice cold. Could this be the "bad diode on the alternator" issue that I found from reading previous posts regarding battery drain? Thank you in advance for anyone's input. Paul Kansas City |

Paul, Not being too electrical myself, I would assume it's a bad diode. The alternator shouldn't be receiving any charge from a charging battery if the car is off. It makes sense that, that being the case, the alt. gets warm since there is current flowing through it when it shouldn't. If you aren't already asleep, disconnect the alt. from the loop and charge overnight. Should start fine. Do you have a volt meter? that would be the best test. good luck pwc |

Also, check your ground cable. Mine had corroded quite badly down under and from up top everything looked just dandy. Just a possibility though. |

Sounds like my trouble. I bought a multimeter and measure 3.3amps drain with everything off! New battery willl last overnight but no longer. Alternator is rebuilt and I'm arguing with the guy- I think it's the diode! Disconnect the pos. cable and measure the amps draw(sorry- not just the volts- more expensive meter). You'll know quickly if it's a big killer. I've got an EE brother in town for holidays and plan to pull fuses one by one to find the culprit. Incidentally, if you let the battery die "deader than hell" the SRS light will go into low voltage and you get to spend $80 to be told that! |
