Need a new starter on my 95 Discovery. Once in a while itll just spin, so I guess its time to replace before completely fails. A few options Ive come up with:

- Mean Green Starter about $300 (searched archives and see that this is recommended)

- Rebuilt Starter
http://autoexpress.safeshopper.com/1890/cat1890.htm?75
1994-1995 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 3.9L (8 Cyl)
$25 Core Deposit is included in price. Remanufactured starter with 3 years warranty.
$ 125.95

- New Starter (dont believe its OEM)
http://catalog.auto-parts-wholesale.com/?make=RO&year=1995&x=70&y=0 Starter New Bosch F5000-63353 Bosch list: $494.37 our price: $207.42
Starter F5000-54552 list: $494.37 our price: $ 328.80

Advice please. Also, is this a pretty straightforward job?

When the starter just spins the first time, is that a sign that it is failing? When it is cold outside, and i try to start my truck first thing in the morning, it will just spin. Next time i try, it works fine. Is that a sign it needs replaced?

I have the same symptoms as you guys do... Will just spin the first time (or two) when it is cold out.

I picked up a new starter at the LR dealer for just under $200, but have not installed it yet. I figure as long as I keep driving around with it in the back of the truck, the original one will be OK. I don't dare leave it in the garage :)

Kyle, HAve you had any problems with the mean green after it gets wet? I have heard that once it gets wet, its not so "mean".

" I have the mean green and I wouldnt go back to a stocker..."

Can you elaborate on why you wouldn't go back?

I havnt had any issues with it Will. I wouldnt go back because it takes alot less juice to kicck the truck off with it. It starts much better then with a stock starter.

Damn..... I didn't think to look and see if mean green made a starter that would fit my truck when it went out the other day, I guess I just assumed they didn't. I've always heard good things about them but I guess I've got to blow through another genuine one before I get to try one out.

After you hit the key on that mean green the first time you wont even think about going back.... Sounds like a high end euro car kicking off....

Is it possible to just replace the contacts in the stock starter? The Mean Green sounds great, but a $20 solution may be worth looking into as well.

Mine has "skipped" a few times recently.......

if your starter just spins the first time when its cold.. the Bendix Spring is probably getting weak.. this is the spring the disengages the starters teeth when it hits a certain RPM... This spring is about a $10 part if all else is fine with the starter.. Find a good auto electrical place in your area and have them test it.. they can probably rebuild it cheaper & better than anything you could buy.. Green Monster or not (not worth the $$ IMOO) Once you find this auto electric place.. they can also rebuild your alt. when it shits the bed...

kyle,
are you saying the disco isn't a "high end euro car"?

I also run the Mean Green. It has seen many river crossings and seems to do the job just fine. I think mine is going on 3 years old now.

Plus it just sounds soooo much cooler than the stock starter. Sounds like a NASCAR starter. Or something like that.
