Hope some of you are out there this Sunday as I screwed up and urgently need to make things right. (Haven't received my service manual yet.) Crawled under our recently acquired 97 Discovery to change the oil and rather stupidly pulled the first low point drain plug I saw. Thought to myself "boy that's clean oil" before realizing that it wasn't engine oil. So I need to add some more fluid. From searching around here and various websites I'm pretty sure that it's transmission fluid, to be added through the filler line located upper left portion of engine compartment. Can anyone confirm that this is likely what needs to be done or lead me to some diagrams/photos of the underside? The plug I pulled is farther towrds the rear of the vehicle than the oil drain plug and just about in the center. It is at the bottom of a smooth surfaced housing. If it's the trans fluid I know what to do from there. |

Yup, you drained out some transmission fluid. It was reddish, right? What you did is not really a bad thing, the transmission fluid needs to be changed every now and then, too. You should need about 5-6 quarts to fill it back up, since you won't drain the torque converter by opening the drain plug. Just check the level on the transmission dipstick when you are done, make sure it is not too high or low (both are bad), then you are all set. If the transmission fluid that came out was brownish red, you should drive the car for a couple of days, then drain and fill the transmisison again. |

I your opinion, what is the best kind of fluid and brand? |
