My 99 Dll front sun roof opens and slides to the front just fine, but it occasionally will not close completely. Repeated pushing of the switch has been working, but yesterday I had to pull down on the sun roof will depressing the switch. Is this a switch problem or a motor problem, ect? Did a keyword search, but no luck.

Hi-

Just been through the same prob. on both windows on a '94. What has likely happened is that a plastic bushing slider has crumbled and a piece or pieces are jamming the mechanism. My wife and I disassembled the rails off our front window after it would do precisely what yours is doing. After finding cracked and worn sliders we assumed we'd be able to get replacement sliders for some premium price. Lo and behold, Rover sells entire new rails for only $65.

The date stamps on the two sets of rails I removed from our 94 Disco were 96 front and 97 rear, meaning, this is a long term maintenance item on a well used vehicle. Really not a problem if it's something that has to be done every 80,000 or so.

The mechanism is really very simple and the only thing that can cause it to do what it's doing is a foreign item. I suspect it's a piece of a slider but you'll have to see.

Feel free to ask questions.

Lance,

I have a 94 as well, and both of my sunroofs are wacky - the front one has stopped working altogether, and my rear one opens occasionally.

When you say Rover sells rails for $65, is that for a set???

How hard is it to replace them? If they are $65 a set, hell, I'll buy two sets and give it a shot...

Any thoughts?

Chuck-

Do you know if the sunroofs are the originals?

If so, the current-issue rail and track SETS are non-compatible with the '94 drainage pans, or so I was told by my dealership. In which case, you'll have to find post-'96 used pans, or buy new ones for $250 a piece. Date stamps are in the black mounting flange where the window is screwed to the rails. But you'll have to remove the window and look on the top, cuz that's where they are.

Lemme know-

With my sunroof the switch (or the motor) makes a loud buzzing noise when the sunroof opens and closes completely. It opens and closes just fine but is this a future problem waiting to happen or is this normal operation?

Lance -

I don't know if this is an indication of the same problem "yet to be"-hopefully you can help. I also have a 99D2 just coming up on 80K. I've had exceptional luck with the vehicle after reading some of the horror stories here. Just minor probs -driver front seat rail, hood cable release, wiper blades, not many more. Here's the problem. As of late the front sun roof has begun to rattle, in either open position. I think it's the mounts holding the glass and they seem to use hex head screws. How does one get at them to tighten? Do you have to remove the headliner?
Also do you know a remedy for the cracking noise it makes when opening?

turn up your radio and you wont here the rattles. If you do any kind of offroading the rattles will accumulate and that little sunroof thing will seem minute

As I recall seeing on Alldata.com some discos had a technical service bulletin for two little plastic tabs that should be trimmed by some rediculously small amount like a few milimeters to stop the popping. I have it all the time in the summer especially with my 95 from the expansion it makes everything much tighter.

Henry-

The sunroof screws are Torx, T-15 is the size.
Many inexpensive screwdrivers with multiple bits have a T-15, maybe you have one? Otherwise, get one designed to be used in a drill/driver, they're about 3/4" long. Clamp the bit in a needlenose Vice Grip. With the sunroof open a couple inches you can reach the screws.

Chris-

The interior pane on the driver's side allows the window to act as a plenum bringing air from the rear air conditioner to the registers in the center of the car. Air travels up the left rear pillar and splits, from there it crosses above the rear window to the jump seat registers and via the window/duct to the middle registers.
