When I drained the front axel the fluid was real thick almost like it had grease in it. The rear had water. Is there anything special I should do except redrain and fill after a few miles. I have a 98 D1 with 71,000 miles. All servive up to this point has been done at the dealer except 2 previous oil changes.

Draining once should be sufficient, The oil will displace the remaining water soon enough-that and you'll change the fluids again.

What you should be concerned about though was where did the water come from in the first place? Had you been wading? Have you noticed any staining around the axle housing, indicating a bad seal? It might be worth the slight amount of time and insignificant cost to replace the axle seals. Use the two-lipped ones, RTC 3511.

Also, don't forget to check the swivels!!!

Thanks, I have been out of town and was not able to check the board this past week. I have been through a couple low water bridges that were deep enough to put the axel under water. I have not noticed any straining but I will check again since I just returned from a 1600 mile trip.

Is the best practice for the swivels to add the drain plug and convert them ?
