AWD vs. Four Wheel Drive. I'm sure this question might seem dumb, but I'm just wondering, what's the difference, other than the term itself. My buddy has a Merc. Mountaineer, AWD and no 4-wheel drive. Of course, we are lucky enough to have both on our Disco. But why doesn't the Mountaineer have the 4wd option? Could ours do that much more? |

Yes, however, it is the Holiday season so.... Do a "Keyword Search" function to your left under Utilities and you will find much information. Also on the LR web page there is a nice article about choosing a vehicle that also describes the various systems out there. Jaime |

This may not directly answer the question but may help shed light on the topic... http://www.bb4wa.com/articles/winter.htm |

the Disco 2 is strictly an AWD vehicle unless you tamper with the center diff rd |

That is if you CAN tamper with the center diff. ~3Q2001-2003 NAS Discoveries are AWD (3 open diffs) while the 1999-early 2001 D2's can be tampered to be "4wd" or AWD. All D1's are both. |

Sorry for the redundant question. It's the holidays and my head still hurts from last night. |

That's cool. I'm just sitting here at work looking at a blank excel screen and thinking about my bed. |

Disco's are acutally Permanent 4WD meaning the truck is always in 4WD and you have a selectable transfer box. AWDs are always in 4WD like Perm 4WD but dont have 2 speed transfer gearbox (like a Freelander and Mountaineer for example). Full-Time 4WD lets you select between 4WD and 2WD Chris von C. |
