My brakes work great 99% of the time, however, occasionally As I press them they become very hard, pulsate, and will not stop the vehicle quick enough to be safe. Of course I still drive it. This usually occurs at low speeds. Also, the cruise control had recently quit working. I wonder if both could be related to vacuum leak? Any input would be appreciated. Where would I begin to even look. (other than a dealership) Thanks. |

Describe your vehicle (year, model, miles, etc.). It sounds to me like that one or more of your ABS sensors (probably the fronts) are the problem. The pulsating that you feel is most likely the ABS pump kicking in. Thanks, Mike B. |

Welcome to the world of crappy ABS. Disconnect the power leads at the ABS pump and you'll be much happier. |

The rover is a 1996 D1 with 72000 miles. A little tad bit of info I forgot to mention... My abs light came on a while back, but the brakes worked fine. I read some where on this site that most people just remove the bulb, so I did. So mike you are probably right. Eric, is it safe to disconect it? I mean, will I just have regular brakes? Thanks guys. As for the cruise control, mine quit on my 95 D1. I replaced the all the rubber hoses on the cruise contol system. Costs about $1.50 and has worked great since. The hoses crack with age and create vacuum loss! |

Brad, I have a 1996 Disco 1 as well. Just disconnect the ABS and the only side effect you will have is better brakes ... on and off road (and the annoying ABS light). Do a forum search and you will find a few good threads on this subject. FWIW I have been ABS unplugged for the last 4 months. -Eric PS - Usually there is enough extra tubing in the Cruise control line that you can simply pull a few extra inches from the fire wall to make up for the removal of the split ends. |

Im going to disagree just a little, you may want to have your dealer or someone check out your system for the problem, I have a 96 with 114,000 on it and the ABS works flawlessly, and has proved invaluable off-road many times..call me a wuss but I dont like locking up my tires when traveling down a steep terrain. |

The cruise control was in fact the hose from the cruise control actuator at the throttle body to a "t". I just cut the hose back an inch at the (actuator?) and now it works fine. As for the brakes... I am still debating on disconecting that pump. I'm leary of it, but it sounds like the best course of action. Thank you all for your input. It is really appreciated. Brad |
