Just the other day I stopped in just to look around and the Discos had CDL and just to make sure I asked the salesman if the ones with CDL are for sale and he said yes. I found one that was sold already as well. |

From what I have heard, the 2003 NAS discos have a CDL placard but no CDL. The placard is there because everywhere else in the world the Disco has CDL. Go back to the dealer and see if you can engage in CDL. I will be surprised if it works. Report back what the salesman says, now that will be funny! -John 99D2 |

yep, try to actually move the lever over, that pretty little placard doesn't mean anything and most dealers are idiots who probablly can't even tell you what "CDL" stands for. |

Dunno about the US but in Oz, '03 discos do now actually have a workable CDL lever, just like the D1s. Had a spin in one couple of weekends ago. |

The funny thing is here, they now advertise it as "The new improved Discovery, now with centre diff lock." Like, what did it have before?! A piece of chewing gum that would bind up when the going got rough?! Fairly indicative of the people theyre marketing them to here.... |

from 99-02 they didn't have a CDL (at least not one you could engage off the show room floor w/ out crawling under the truck), they relied totaly on the ETC system. Thats why it is improved, because they brought the CDL back (where you are anyway). |

They also forget that we saved their asses in WWII. They as well as the French were getting worked over pretty good by Hitler and the boys. Hey John, I took the Mrs to see an '03 Disco and I asked the Sales Guide if the CDL was back in and their reply was, "CDL? What's that?" I just couldn't believe it. |

Paul, Those guys can be ignorant. I will say this, we have had a TON of snow here in Albany, NY and the ETC has been great. My 99D2 has been tackling the steep icy with little problems. Obviously, no hard core wheeling situation, but my disco goes where the others spin their wheels. -John |

Has anyone ever gotten a straight answer form LRNA as to why they think that they can sell more '03 Dlls WITHOUT a CDL, rather than WITH one? Inquring minds want to know... |

This is just my guess, but I think it has more to do with decreasing the costs due to warranty claims. I can't imagine how many people, who have no idea what CDL is, turn it on and cause damage. Land Rover is now in the business of selling an image and not the vehicle that created the image, there will be no shortage of fools lined up to buy the current model. LRNA sales have increased steadily over the past few years, and some tool at LRNA headquarters will interpret that as a validation of the current changes that have been made. The only problem with this is that when the image of the "best 4x4xfar" is gone, the ignorant masses will have moved on to the next fad. This leaves the enthusiasts without the vehicles that attracted them to Land Rover in the first place. |

Personally speaking, it seems ludicrous to manufacture a vehicle that no longer has the CDL capability. But, here in America, it seems that LRNA is more interested in style and fashion that true off-road ability. Ryanspeed- While the masses will definitely move onto the next fad, it seems to me that the enthusiasts (like those people who post to this board) already have the vehicles that attracted them to LR! |

jay True....but nothing lasts forever. Wouldnt it be nice to have one that is an 2006 model down the road that you can be proud of instead of another Fordcolincoln Expedlosionvigator? The point is that while the vehicles that made the name are what the enthusiasts like, Ford/Lincoln/LR is making something that appeals to the masses instead of continuing the legacy that the LR built. I agree with Ryan on this one. The masses, the fad gone away, and the lost name of that which our passions all grow around will be gone and we will be left with nothing but the bragging rights of the past. Imagine it now.... It is the year 2006... "Oh yeah, well my buddy's Nissan will beat your Ford Rover Discoverydition any day of the week." Izzat what you want? Oh Lord.... |

Perhaps LR wanting to sell to the masses has to do with the continuation of the company as a whole? I can think of a lot of companies that stood on their morals and tried to continue making highly specialized products and went bankrupt because of it. Also, perhaps the lack of CDL on the NA Disco2's is a marketing ploy to bring it back, but make you pay for it. It would make sense .... discontinue a feature long enough so that when you bring it back into market you can sell it as a high $$$ option. Just a thought. Lastly, the NA market is not the only one that get's screwed on things. While I was at one of the Tokyo dealers last month, they were telling me that 2004 would be the last year that the Defender would be imported to Japan. According to the dealer, this change has nothing to do with vehicle sales ... evidently LR Japan is just doing what corporate HQ is telling them. We only had the choice of the 110, but now it looks like we are getting no choice at all. Todd |

2006, 2010...whats the difference? It doesn't matter if you put a 2120 date on it, the point remains the same. I am just hoping that Ford does not bastardize the product any further, but you know what they say: You can hope in one hand and piss in the other and see which fills up fastest. |

Al- Jeep I'll give you (especially with the Rubicon, although the Liberty is a sellout replacement for the old Cherokee's), but if BMW and Porshe and Mercedes for that matter stuck to their sports car/lux car roots, you wouldn't have the X5, Cayanne, or M-class... Total sell-outs. All- Companies do what they think will make them $$$. SUV's are popular, so everyone is making SUV's. Since nearly no one drives them off-road, on-road performance matters and off-road performance does not. It's all a marketing ploy. The H2 Hummer is supposed to kick ass off road and has the goods (ETC, lockers, etc), but has anyone seen a comercial yet where it's going anywhere but a smooth dirt road? It's not real off-road capability, but the perception that you "could" take it off road. But at the same time, "off-road" really just means not a paved road to the masses. Real "off-road" trails that people on this board go on would make your average SUV owner poop their drawers. I took my dad and brother in-law on a "moderate" trail - nothing too tough - and the D2 cruised through w/out any trouble. But on some spots they were amazed at where we were going. BTW- am I the only one who gets REALLY REALLY annoyed at Suburbans, etc. with 20" low profile tires. Just screams POSER! Bottom line - LRNA needs to get off their ass and make CDL an option here in the States. Scott |

Bankrupt, BMW hasnt gotten even close to Bankrupt, infact their sales are up, even with out the mini, If I remeber right they had like 6% of the market share in the US which is pretty significant. Not sure on Porsche so I wont speak to it, but Jeep is just the same, they build what people expect and over time they become established enough to make a profit. IMHO I think some strong leadership may have pulled LR out of their financial troubles but that is water under the bridge, for now we can just watch and wait... and keep stockpiling those Disco1s. :D |

There is a good reason behind Porsche building an SUV. Yes, they are the fashion at the moment - and Porsche picked up on that. Many 911 owners had SUVs aswell, namely MLs or X5s. Porsche has very strong brand loyalty. They decided they would capitalise on that and that if Mr more-money-than-sense is going to have an SUV to go with his 911, he might aswell have a Porsche SUV. Hence they built the Cayenne and they are expecting to sell quite a few. You have to remember though, they arehorses for courses. While the ML or *maybe* the X5 is the most capable "off road" (ie. on a slightly slippery dirt road) theyre not meant for MOAB or the Canning Stock route and cannot and should not be judged so. In fact the Cayenne has acceleration and handling to embarras many a "sports" car. Car companies need to move with the times. If you stay only with what youve always done, youll go under. eg Jaguar's X type, all wheel drive, 6 cylinder and as compared to how long its been on the market, their biggest seller yet. Absolute sacrilige with the purists but the thing is, against fleets or CEOs, purists dont buy many cars. If you want to picky, the Freelander is a sellout. But thats another story... On side note, if anyone wants to pick a fight on "ze chermanz" building cars with ground clearance and calling them 4WDs, lets talk about them good ol US-of-A boys chopping a door out of a sedan, dropping in a mammoth engine and calling it a sports car shall we.....? Bring on the Nepalm...

I wouldn't mind a cayenne, if i could afford it. SUVs are convenient and comfy for long drives, but I always yearn for some damn SPEED! My disco 2 is a 70-80mph cruiser, if it ain't vibing. The expedition is good for about 90mph cruising. The M3 cruises easily between 120-130. Maybe more, but that's my own limitation. But now if we can get that in a 4x4 but also run some decent trails from time to time... |

Chu, What year M3 is it? Its most likely governed to 155mph. They all are, even the X5 with the V8. I cant speak for the X5 but I can tell you that a 540i estate (the same platform and engine as the X5) will reach the governer given the right conditions. Get thee to a BMW dealer..... |

Peter, It's an 02. Them germs sure build things that feel stable at high speeds. We've gone past 140, but haven't hit the governor yet. I'm sure the X5 is probably great interstate vehicle as well. There's a few stretches Utah/Nevada that just demands a little more velocity than the poor disco can offer. chu |
