- 1999 LR Disco SD
I'm about to attempt to reset this light.

Last night on my way home the Service Engine light came on. I immediately pulled off to a gas station and called a LR dealer to inquire. He asked me what my mileage was (currently 87,877) and said I need to come in for an emissions maintenance. Also told me that it's going to run me about $250 in parts and labor. Should I assume that is the only thing wrong? I didn't see anything out of the ordinary under the hood and the vehicle hasn't been driving any different.

My question is, what's involved in this service and can I do it myself?
Can anyone point me to some helpful sites or documents?

Thanks in advance.
Already looked here for help with resetting the Emission Maintenance Reminder -> http://www.discoweb.org/reset/index.htm

It's a good time to replace oxygen sensors, etc., but usually there's nothing critical.

Earlier Discos has this little box under the passenger seat that you could poke a straightened out paper-clip through to reset the light. I don't have my manual with me, but I 'think' that you have to use the OBD-II system to cut it off. (Hmmm... I recall something about the reset box, though, being relocated from under the passenger seat into the footwell... hmm.... I'll have to check...) Maybe someone cant pitch in here before I get home and look...

FWIW...

Anyone else have anything to add? I guess I need to go out and purchase a manual.

Kris,
does your state require emissions testing?
did the disco pass?

the only "testing" they do, i believe, is check the O2 sensors and reset the light. you are getting a bargin at $250, i thik others had quotes for $350 or so :)

Kristopher, you pretty much have it right there. The link to resetting the light and the fact that it is just an emissions service. They might not replace anything, but just make sure everything is ok, and still charge you for the check up. The main thing at this service, I believe, is O2 sensors. Here is a link to a maintenance schedule:

Someone else may chime in with anything else that should be checked.

I have a '95 and the little box, LOL, was under the passenger seat. Sometimes there's one in the passenger seat, LOL. Anyway, in the tech section they have the info on resetting a '96, and that reset box is in the passenger kick panel. I'm not sure about DII's. Good Luck Kristopher.

Question about the little box:

This box appears to be completely sealed on my 1995 Disco. There is a chinsy looking Land Rover sticker on the top, is the little hole under there? Do I void my mudflap warranty if I look underneath or poke multiple holes in this sticker?

I need help here - really.

Cheers,

Erik

Okay. I just poked a hole in the top of that little TRW box with a paperclip and can't seem to find a button to depress, or switch to move up/down or left/right.

Any suggestions for idiotboy?

Kinda related a friend of mine just bought a used Nissan Pulsar NX and the Maintenance light came on I think the mileage was 100k+ anyway he asked how to reset it I looked it up on the internet and told him. He kept telling me that it didn't work so he got his hands on a owners manuel, turns out in the manuel it tells you how to reset it just like I told him. Then has a (*) that says after xxx amout of miles that it can't be reset you are to remove the fuse. I got a kick out of that.

Hey Jon,

LOL, That was me! I did the same thing and was waiting for a click, or some sign that I had reset it. It didn't happen. No sound or sign of it resetting at all. Just put it back in, and start the truck up. It's probably reset. That's how my experience went. Good Luck.

Okay,

Box is (supposed to be) in the passenger kick-panel on late DI Discos.

Erik,

When you insert the paperclip, what you're doing is actually closing a circuit. There are two terminals inside the box, one over the other. When the paperclip is pushed in through that hole, you touch both terminals, thus letting the paperclip act as a jumper. Closing that circuit resets the "Service Engine" light.

I reset the light last night. Had some trouble closing the circuit so I ended up prying the cover off. It looks like crap now but no one will ever see it like that but me and LR.

I actually scraped the sticker of the top so I could try and see inside.

Hope I can't get in trouble for doing it this way.
Also, what's involved in changing the oxygen sensors? Where are the located and what do the look like. Are the expensive?

Nathan at Discount Rovers has the best price.

Basically, you unscrew them out of the exhaust and unplug the wires, then screw in the new ones and plug them up.

There's another thread on this board discussing the very same thing.... browse around this board, look in the archives, and almost all of your questions can be found. Yeah, that's a lot of reading, but you'll learn a LOT if you'll read all that you can on this board.
