I'm looking to put 7.5R16 Michelin XZL's on my 95 Disco and am a little concerned about the final drive gearing. Has anybody had any bad experiences with the stock gearing and 31"/32" tires over the stock 29" tires? Any suggestions? |

Ahh yes. And further to Todd's question, I'd love to hear from anyone who has a set of 245/75 on their DI. Particularly BFG ATs. My local tyre dealer tells me the Michelins it has on it now (as per stock) are no longer made and I was hoping for something a bit taller. As its only a small increase, am I going to have clearance problems with stock suspension? I dont do much rock crawling, mostly beach work. Ta. |

I can't say from experience on the D1 but I think the gearing on the D1, D2 and the D90 are all the same (but I could be wrong). So based on that I would say 31" is fine. 32" might be pushing it as I'm sure some here will say but I'm running 32" on my D2 with no problems after getting used to it. But gearing down at 32" might be the better route. |

Alot of people run 31/32" tires, stock gears, with no complaints or problems, including myself, I run a 32". Yes you will lose some acceleration and your speedo will be slightly off, but you're driving a land rover and it already is no sports car, so no loss there. Yes I would like to have 4:11 gears, but cannot justify the cost/benefit ratio. Just go for it. |

I run 235/85/16's as many many others on this board do as well. Mine measure 31.7 inches tall so would be considered a 32" tire. I have stock gearing. Do I notice a difference? Yes. Is it enough to make me re-gear? No. Just like Alan said above "it is not a sports car so no loss..." I had a friend with BFG AT's in the 245/75/16 size on his D1. Even with some cutting he would still rub from time to time under heavy loads, etc. Later.. RS |

We run 235/85's on our D1. Initially the wife complained about not being able to make it up some hills at the 75 MPH speed limit... Of course I haven't been able to convince her to "drive it like she stole it" so i put in 4.11's She is happy that she can now zip around like she used to and hold the speed on the hills.. We are also 5500 feet above Sea Level. |

I just put 265/75/16 (Mastercraft) on my 95. I have the OME 2" stuff (Thanks Ho!) and they fill the wheel well. I will be doing some trimming today on the front spoiler. It grinds pretty bad while turning. Looks cool when the hood shakes! It is slower than you can imagine, my mpg is down to 10, and I really have to think it over before I consider passing anyone. It looks cool though. I figured my speedo would be off big time, but it is damn near tack on according to my GPS V. It does seem to handle fine. Brendan |

If you go up in tire size on a D1 (even to 245/70/R16's), you will have clearance problems with the rear tires. They will just clip the bottom rear of the rear fenderwell. The amount you have to trim is very minor and won't be noticed if done right. Do a search for "mending braces" if you are afraid of cutting the fenders. Thanks, Mike B. |

Thanks all for the opinions. I'm going to try running the tires without regearing, but, if I should have to, does anybody know of a source for replacement gear sets? |
