Hey everyone, it's been a while since I've posted, but I've run into another problem with my 95 Disco.

Earlier yesterday it wasn't starting. It was just trying to turn over (almost like a dead battery), but then, on the 3rd attempt, it started. I started the engine about 4 more times that day with no problem, until I wanted to drive home, where it decided to be difficult.

I get the same sound of it "trying" to turn over, but it just wont. We went back to look at it today, but we couldnt really do much because of the cold weather. Heard a whine coming from the engine when we turned the key. Didnt help when we tried to jump it.. seems like it has plenty of juice.

So we're thinking either the distributor or the fuel pump. 153k miles. I dont know if the fuel pump has been replaced yet, as I bought used.

Thanks for any insight, or hints as to where to look next.

Paul T Schram (from this board) taught me well: Look for the simple things first:
Does it have gas? -If you don't own a fuel pressure guage then use a cheapo tire guage and check your fuel pressure at the fuel rail.

Does it have fire? -Pull your plugs and take a look at them - (you may well find that your plug wires will disintegrate in your hand when you try to pull them off). Check your cap and rotor.
If all that checks out, THEN start looking for bigger things.

Good luck,
Jim

Let me ask, for clarification...

Is it actually turning over but not starting? Or is it not even turning over?

Yeah it's trying to start, it gets SOOOO close, but wont. It sounds like it is turning over, but it's either not getting a spark or it's not getting fuel.

It has a fresh tank of gas (by the way).

The plug wires were just replaced. When I replaced my exhaust manifold gaskets, the wires just disentigrated in my hands :), so we needed to replace them. We didnt use the stock OEM wires, because it was a Sunday and I had to get back to school the following day, so we used another set of wires (new) that we pulled off a truck we were rebuilding (7mm wires I believe).

Anyhow, we're going to check the cap/rotor today. I really do hope it's something simple.

I'll give you guys an update here pretty soon I hope, but if you have any other suggestions, please give them.

How does the car run once you get it going? As good as it ever did or with some hesitation/sluggishness?

Have you checked the timing? Should be between 6 and 10 BTDC. Up at our altitude of 6000 feet 12 BTDC worked best.

Started it up once, and it ran just great. Next time I go out to start it, it didnt want to start.
