I have a '97 D1 (90K mi) and am replacing the u-joints. I have removed the rear drive shaft and have pressed in the new NAPA joints. However, the front shaft appears to be a b*tch, especially the end connected to the transfer case. I cannot even fit a wrench (14mm) on the bolts/nuts. I have looked in the tech section and archives and it appears that it is easier to remove the diff end first. What advice does everyone have for removing the front shaft? I really want to get this done, and it looks like I am now stuck. |

Yep. Drop the diff end first then you can push the shaft up towards the motor. That should give you clearance to insert a wrench. |

Brian, one other thing to look at. I removed both drive shafts on my D2 recently; the nuts looked and smelled like a 14mm and the socket even fit some of them but they were really 9/16 nuts. The 14mm is slightly smaller than the 9/16 so your socket won't quite fit onto the bolts right. Add this to the tight working space and you get rounded edges and a pain-in-the-ass removal process. Don't know if the D1 has the same issue but thought I would mention it. Rick |

Actually Rick, in my first attempt to remove the drive shaft, the 14MM open-end portion of the wrench kept sliding off of the bolts (actually nuts) and would round them off slightly. I stopped before I did too much damage. This time I will try the 9/16ths. Thanks. |
