My Cat. Converters have been rattling around lately. It seems the honeycomb stuff inside has broken loose and is making the noise. How hard is it to take a rod and break up the guts inside my cats? Anyone done this before? Any drawbacks to doing this?

What year is yours LR, there is an 80k warranty on those providing not one bit of off road damage is visible.

If your set on removing guts. Remove the ypipe I would remove the O2 carefully.

Then saw the welds off at the outlet. Heavily Scribe several align marks for reassembly.

You can then punch the guts out, I used a long screwdriver then reweld the Ypipe.

I would not recommend beating the sides and shaking the chucks out. That could cause stress cracks the housing.

Also to keep in mind punching out the guts could make your O2 sensors give false readings back to the ECU

Hope this helps, your turn Annon

Unfortunatly it has 140k on it. Is there a way to get the guts out without cutting it open? BTW, why would the O2 sensors give back a false reading? They are both in front of the Cats.

may not matter where you're at, but this is a $10K fine if you get busted here in seattle, home of many eco-nazis. i am a bit of a tree-hugger myself, but that's another story . .

anyway, I did the 14" universal summit cats on my rangie here about 6 weeks ago; installed they only ran $300 for the pair.

cheers,

grady,
not to be difficult, i simply just don't understand, but how does rmoving the guts of the cats effect the O2 sensors. i thought they read the exhaust as in the gas itself and not the pressure. i am not wanting to start a debate just curious.

On 96+ you have O2s behind the cats as well.

Depends upon the type of O2 sensor system you have. Late '96 and forward have 4 sensors 2 pre-cat used to set fuel trim, and 2 post-cat ones to check the perfromance of the cats. If you punch out the cats you'll get the "check engine" light.

ok that makes sense, i have a 94 with just two O2 sensors just in front of the cats. i see now why you would say it makes a differences.thanks
