A question to happy owners of Adventure rack: are there any ways to carry skis on it? Any kind of attachments, cramps, etc? Or I will be forced to use those ski racks attached to the hitch reciever?

You can adapt Thule or Yakima attachments to fit the rack tubing. I have not done this with ski racks, but have with the Thule canoe feet. I have also seen complete Yakima feet and cross bars (Jay - you out there?) attached directly to the rack.

When I travel with x-country skis, I just leave them in 2-pair-bags and strap these to the rack. Sometimes they sit inside the rack basket, sometimes they're tied outside the basket (like when I have two full rooftop bags up there).

The last suggestion I have is to cover a few rack tubes with rubber heater hose (zip tied in place), then use bicycle toe straps to hold your skis to the rack tubes.

The solutions are endless! The rack utility is priceless!

...Here's a pic of what I did...
...Works well...
...Sometimes it's a little difficult to load 4 pairs up there without an extra hand...

BUT:
1 They're accessible from the Ground
2 Keep's the rack open for other stuff
3 And you can load from the curb
4 Careful in the woods...I have hit them

that's pretty cool. Probably looks like you're carrying sidewinder missiles when you're en route to the slopes...hehe

Slider,

I like the way you think Slider. Any progress on the 'thin' ladders?

Sorry- been away on a movie lately!

Anyway, to carry an outrigger canoe, I use the Yakima factory roof rack attachments and the Yakima cross bars paired with the Yakima canoe slings. This setup is readily adapted to the Yakima ski carriers or whatever Yakima accessories you desire.

But that does require spending the extra $200 or so for the Yakima system - an unnecessary additional expense to carry skis if you don't happen to have the Yakima racks already.

I use them because I had the Yakima System before I bought the Adventure Rack.

And with Slider's example, there really isn't a serious need for the Yakima Racks!

Good Luck!

I came up with a very simple way to mount Yakima Buttondown 6 mounts on my Adventure rack. I used the adaptors that mount the Buttondowns to the normal Yakima cross bars. I just built up the crossbars on the Adventure rack with electrical tape until they were the same thickness as the Yakima cross bars. The skis will point down a little bit because one crossbar is on the lower tier and one crossbar is on the upper tier, but it does work just fine. Hope this helps.

Slider- What brand/model rack is that? You have it clipped to the rack on top and the gutter on the bottom... did you rig your own adapter/clamps or did you work with the accessories that were included in the rack kit?

This is a Thule system.
I have Thule parts from my other vehicles, otherwise I'd use new Yakima stuff.

I cut a load bar in 2 pcs.
put the endcaps on.
Drilled and tapped 4x collar clamps.
Mounted the collars to the adventure rack.
Screwed the bars to the collars.
Mounted the skirack to the bars.

It keeps my height down so I can fit in the garage too.

Bikes?...bikes you say?...that's another whole story.

I can see clearly now. Thanks for your lucid explanation. I've considered several possibilities, but yours is the most original balance of form and function. Excellent... thanks.
