I picked up a Napa trailer harness the other day instead of the LR trailer harness from my LR Center. I was wondering if either one needs splicing into the vehicle, ie running power (red) to the battery via the frame rail etc. and splicing into any existing tail light wiring, and if so, what troubles/solutions did you folks have with either wiring setup...I really thought it was plug in and use... Thanks Christian 99' DII |

Christian, you should have purchased the factory kit. Just remove passengeside tail light and plug right into factory harness. Complete with mounting bracket to factory hitch. You can find them at many vendirs listed on this site. |

I used the factory harness on mine, it was simple and easy. It also comes with a 5 wire to 3 wire adapter... |

I ordered a factory wiring kit for the 95 disco. What I got was a cigarette lighter-looking thing that has 7 wires (with insulation stripped from ends) coming off it. The other end of the "lighter" has a fitting that gets attached to the existing wiring socket (in the pass. side rear tail light compartment). My question is: Do I just buy a harness from pep boys that has 7 wires coming off and splice it into this thing I got? I noticed there are those round-type trailer wiring connectors that take 7 wires. is that what I need? Or is it those flat type connectors? I'm clueless. Any help would be appreciated. |

The Genuine wiring kit should come with a converter to convert from the 7 wire to the 4 wire. I know mine did on my 98 Disco 1. It just plugs directly into the 'lighter'. Thanks, Mike B. |

For my '95 I went to the dealer and got the part and then went to U-Haul to get the adaptor. Worked for me. An easy set-up! |

Christian, since you purchased the NAPA part I'm assuming that you don't want to run out and buy another LR adapter for $150 - $250. The NAPA is really straightforward to attach if you have a little bit of information before hand. Your kit should have come with 4 blue wire connecters. These are used to "splice" into the correct wires from the adapter plug behind the passenger taillight. You just wrap them around the wire and clamp them shut. There are directions for which wire is which at disco2.com http://www.disco2.com/howto/how-traveller/how-mktrailerharness.html The only thing that wasn't mentioned is the need for power and a ground. The NAPA directions tell you to run a wire to the battery and screw a ground into the support column. This isn't necessary. The adapter plug has power and ground already, you just need two more "splicers" or make the connection with your favorite wire splicing technique. I did this recently; it was easy and quick once I know what to look for. Many people prefer the simplicity of the LR plug but I opted for the 30 minutes of work and the $100 - $200 savings that I applied to a set of rock sliders. This post is already too long so if you want more information e-mail me at [email protected] Rick |
