We've all seen the pictures floating around ... does anyone know if this is scheduled for 2003 or 2004? Alyssa?

It is the same Discovery except it gets new headlights and the 4.6 engine. I was at headquarters last week, and they said they were hoping to start production in July, which means a 2003 model year.

Summer of '02 will bring a 4.6 powered D2 w/o the front end changes. The headlights etc... will come in summer of '03.

The last I heard on the engine changes was that it will have the new 4.4 that is in the Rangie. That was from my last week as a sales guide. Although who knows now it seems to change from day to day.

Ross, that 4.4 is a totally different animal from the 4.6, and without a major change in the Discovery, they can't just swap it in. If I'm not mistaken, the 4.0 and 4.6 have the same block, and it's a fairly easy change over. I know that LRNA told me it would be the 4.6, so I'm pretty sure that's what it's going to be.

How does the 4.6 compare to the 4.0? Is it just marginally better/stronger, or will the Disco benefit greatly?

It will mean a BIG difference in acceleration.
4.6= 222hp @4750 rpm, 300 lb-ft @2,600 rpm
4.0= 188hp @4750 rpm, 250 lb-ft @2,600 rpm

Thanks Alyssa.

Does anyone have an opinion about whether the Rover engines be phased out completely(new RR has the BMW engine already), or will we see a continuation of the 4.6?

...and probably a BIGGER difference in MPG. :)

4.0 = ~ 300 miles / tank
4.6 = ~ 260 miles / tank ?

MPG difference isn't going to be big at all. A Range Rover weighs 2000 lbs more than a Discovery, and gets 12/16 with the 4.6. Even though the Discovery is as aerodynamic as a refrigerator, I wouldn't think the 4.6 would bring the mpg down any further than the Range Rover's current mileage. It currently gets 13/17.

Damn...you sure about that? that would make a rangie heavier than my friend's dodge cummins.

pretty sure it's only 400lbs heavier.

Hmmm... so you're right. Oops. Look what happens when you take someone else's word for it. Someone told me that in training, and I just took it for granted. Discovery curb weight is 4576-4908, GVWR is 6063-6228. Range Rover curb weight is 4960, GVWR of 6130.

for some odd reason the DII 4.6 only puts out 217hp.

But of course! You couldn't have a DII outpowering a Range Rover, now could you?

with regard to the new Disco... the new Rangie will be on a unibody, will the new Discovery still be on a Steel Box Chassis?

03 DII will loose the 5HP because of the single (217HP) pipe, not the RRs duals (222HP). The 03-04, will still be on the familiar ladder frame. From what I've seen the DII won't shouldn't get a major update until 06, maybe 05 at the earliest.

wow, I would hate it if I only got 300 miles on a tank in my disco. Wouldnt that make your mileage 12.5 mpg???

I avg about 390 miles per tank when im just tooling around, but on long trips ive seen it go up to 420 and once 450.

Thats with 245 / 75 MTR's 2.5" lift and a roof rack.

I always use supreme octane gas, and I notice a big difference over lower grades.

does anyone have a feel for how the intro of the 4.6 will effect resale on prior disco ii's? Alyssa - any comments?

If you haven't seen the Disco's new face, check it out at landrover.com. Click on the United States link.

It's new face is "inspired by the new Range Rover" Series III (as I like to call it).

Holy shit, Richard! You average 390 miles per tank? Is that with a DI or a DII? I'm lucky if I get 250 miles per tank on my DI (20 gallons).
