I am putting on my new QT Services diff guards today. The front one goes under the tie rod and connnects where the steering dampener bracket goes on the diff housing. My question is what is this big circular piece of metal that is attached at the same place? It is just a round piece with a bushing in the middle. I can't find it identified in either my Haynes or workshop manual, and its purpose is a total mystery. Anybody know?

Harmonic damper?

I was guessing that it was some sort of vibe killer for the front diff/drive. So I should keep it?

The item you are refering to is the very rare and seldom seen 'thingamajigee'. Also known in some parts of the world as a 'doohickey' In the old country our ancestors tried for many years to hunt down this strange and frightening creature to no avail. It moves like the wind, is a master of camouflage with no regard for its own safety. Whatever you do, DON'T TOUCH IT!! IT'LL BLOW!!!

ps.it is probably the harmonic damper

seriously scott, mine has the same thing, seems to be some sort of damper for front axle vibration. I dont think it will blow, but I am taking no chances!! Is it in the way of the dif guard? Does yours have a small piece of wire cable running from one side to the other? JMcD

I'm lucky I guess, it didn't attack when handled. Must still be sleeping. I'll quickly re-attach it before it wakes! Thanks.

Yeah the cable is there. I really would like to know the logic for the whole thing, particularly the cable. Maybe somebody who knows will pick up on this conversation. I'm going back out and under, I need to finish before the wife comes home from riding!

Come on, can someone actually provide a well-informed non-sarcastic response?
I was planning on removing the rear harmonic dampener from my Disco II and would like to know if it will have any undesired effects?

Sorry, my sense of humor is missing today

We'll find out if it makes a difference, because my QT Services diff guard is not designed with its continued presence in mind. So off it comes.

It's a harmonic dampener. The cable is just a safety strap to prevent it from flying into the car behind you if it should come loose on the highway.
Several people, including me, have removed it with no ill effects, but each Disco is different. If you experience vibrations all of a sudden after removing it, then it obviously did have an effect on your particular truck.

Dave, please read the last line of my original (sarcastic) response. I don't know how much more straight forward I could have put it. Based on what he described, it seemed like he was refering to the harmonic damper..

If I knew any more about its design specs I would have been more detailed. But I don't. Sorry.

Please kiss my ass:) JMcD

Scott, I'm probably going to order the QT diff guards soon. How long did they take to ship over? Also, I thought I heard that you have to do some minor welding on the front diff if you have a left hand drive. Is that true?

Thanks,
Rick

OK, I'm going to have to admit something. I don't own a digital camera, and the one from the office has come up missing, so no pictures.

The front guard requires you attach two small "lugs" for the front part to bolt to. The front diff guard cups under the front diff goes under and behind the tie rod and bolts to the location where the steering stabilizer goes. You have to loose the steering stabilizer bracket, but there is a place for you to re-attach if you have not moved it already. Also the harmonic whats-a-ma-jigger also is lost. I haven't done the welding yet, but the lugs aren't going to sit flat on the sides which concerns me a little.

The rear guard bolts to two holes on the driveshaft part of the diff then wraps under and up the back. It bolts to a bracket that you attach by removing the top three bolts of the diff housing and sliding the bracket under the brake line bracket. The two pieces are suposed to come together but mine doesn't quite reach so I had to go out and by a longer 8mm bolt.

Took about a week to arrive and cost $242 I think for the both of them and shipping. They are beefy and seem to be well designed. Other than the hassle with the bolt I'm happy.

My harmonic damper got broken off up in GA. I cut the wire and continued trail driving. That was 6 months ago and I haven't noticed anything different.

I rec'd my set from QT this week. Wasn't really pleased about the $100 shipping charges though! I did talk to Dave about it, to no avail. Seems that he knows all about UPS but doesn't seem want to use them. He gave me some talk about using this shipping company or that shipping company blah blah blah.

The guards are very tough looking and he did say that the standard front guard will fit a DII. The rear guard will need to be revisited and he has a DII in his shop right now to check out fitment.

My .02cents worth.
