I took my 99 Disco SD into a local shop this Sat. to have the do an alignment. Got a call about 45 minutes later and they had told me that they could'nt get the tie rods loosened up. And they are suggesting that I get them replaced.

Now, I'm going to take it to the local LR dealer and have them do the work. How much am I looking at spending if the tie rods need to be replaced?

I replaced my tie rod ends 2 weeks ago and it took me 2 hours start to finish. I did a D90 last weekend and it took 4 hours and a lot of work.

The parts are not terribly expensive but if your's are very rusted and such, you may be better off buying all new parts. If you take this route, you can easily do this at home, then take it in for alignment.

Ya, I put on my RTE cross track rod kit last year and the tie rods wouldn't even budge.. I bought all new ones and put it together that way.. Just make sure that if you do get them apart to put a little anti-sieze on them so that next time around you will be able to move them.

Is this a fairly easy project to do yourself?

How much should I expect to pay for new ones?

It is an easy project to do yourself if you are not trying to reuse any ball joints. I bought my Tie and Track Rod from RTE. The rods cost $235 and relocation kit $75. (I think Mike Ku has a cheaper reloction kit price). I then bought two RH and two LH steering ball joints from DiscountRover. I ordered all greasable joints but in retrospect would make the front joint that comes off the pitman arm a regular ball joint as the nipple is exposed and susceptible to being busted off.

It all went together in less than an hour. Make sure you measure the length of the old rods and fit the new ones to the same length. You might need to make some final adjustments or take it to garage for an alignment if you don't get those rod lenghts exact.

Update:

Got my truck back from an "Alignment specialist". He told me all is well. One thing he said that surprised me was that the rear wasn't adjustable. ?? Is this correct? The main reason I brought it to him was because I had to replace my tires due to incorrect camber. My rear tires were severly worn out on the inside.

I'm confused. Is this correct?

yes, the rear is non adjustable. it is a solid axle.

Best price I can find on tie rod with end joints is this link from DAP. Dont think it can be used as a jacking point like RTE's but.... it's cheaper and looks stronger than stock.. but what the hell do I know

The DAP rods are an excellent value there 1.185 inches in diameter and the kit comes with all new ends that are fitted with grease fittings. The only down side is you will have to buy a Steering Stablizer relocation kit or a bolt on piece to keep the SS in its current spot. I paid 135.00 plus shipping PS it beats the 125 each for the $G rods
