As a new D2 owner I want to add some under body armour ASAP. I was looking for front and read BOLT on diff guards. I checked out $G but they are only weld on for the D2`s. Can someone point me in the right direction as who makes the best diff guards for the Disco II that are bolt on, and ther best place to order from. THanks!! |

Jeff, I just got my bolt on front diff guard for my Disco II and it is BEEFY. It is the one that a rovers north carries. I have not had it out on the trail yet but I think it will do a great job Here is a pic of it after the paint job. The side brackets go around the axels. For the rear I will be putting on a rockware rear pinion guard when it arrives later this week

DAVE, I can`t seem to locate that DIFF GUARD on Rovers North. I can only find the one that looks the $G one. What Model# or Cat# is that and how much did you pay? |

Jeff, I do not have a stock # for them, I got it from someone here in Denver Mike H that had two but only needed one. I am sure if you call Rovers North and tell them you want the galvanized bolt on DII front Differential guard they will know what you are talking about. Not sure on the price since Mike cut me a deal but I think they are around $140.00 from rovers north Sorry for the lack of info : ( |

Their web site doesn't have the DII guard listed, it is in their print catalog as simply DIFF02. Price is listed at $145. Two words of caution. 1) Make sure you want it/need it/like it before ordering. They recently screwed me out of shipping costs for returning their POS sliders. 2) Don't let them bullshit you into thinking it will fit the rear differential. It won't. After I recieved it, they actually told me that it does fit - but only if you mount it backwards. Unfortunately, I don't 'wheel in reverse. They don't like me all that much anymore, and I don't like them. However, this is a good product regardless. Mike Holmes |

If you guys don't like RN then you don't have to buy this diffguard there. RN just imports stuff from UK and calls it RN stuff like the ZBAR but you can find the same stuff at other places under different names. That diffguard looks alot like a Southdown or some other UK diffguard. Probably alot cheaper at the other places too. |

Myktoolbox, I havent really looked under the Rover yet but i assumed the front and rear diff where the same. Why won't it fit the rear??? |

Jeff, If you look at the picture above, you will see that the guard is a complete circle. To put it on the rear differential facing forward, you would have to run the driveshaft through the center opening of the guard. Either you would have to be a magician or disassemble the driveshaft, install the guard and reconnect the driveshaft through the opening. And the opening may not be large enough anyway. Or you can do it the RN way and mount it backwards, in which case the driveshaft is on the other side of the differential and not an issue. If my terminolgy (driveshaft) is wrong I apologize, perhaps someone can correct it. Mike Holmes |

LOL, I'm sure the RN office was in hysterics over this one Mike, the RN way is the correct way. You might be thinking about a pinion guard. |

Mike, what happens when you have to back out of a rock garden and you hit a rock (going in reverse) with your diff? The diff guard is meant to protect the pumpkin on the axle not the pinion (just like Moe indicated). I have never had a problem with RN. One good thing about the Diff guard mentioned above is that it will not fall off if it gets dragged on a rock. The SG guards will. |

RN laughing? Actually they called me back pretty embarrassed that the manufacturer meant for it to go on backwards. They (RN) admitted it was stupid concept. I would much rather have forward facing protection since that it the time I need it most (99% of the time). Maybe its just me, but I don't have to back out of spots too much. |

It is not a stupid concept. I think you do not realize what a diff protector is for. Even the best rock crawlers have to back out of an obstacle once and a while. It also protects the diff if you drop off a rock and smash the back of the rear pumpkin while going forward. Unless you wheel in a "non" rock environment then I do not see the need for a rear diff guard. |

While the rear pinion guard does seem important, I agree in the respect of protecting the rear of the diff, on the rear axle. More than a few times, I've had to back down hills. When you have less control and sight in reverse, that protection is key. |

Last post, I get bored with message board debates quickly, so here goes. I understand your opinion and the "concept". I just don't agree (about using this product in the way you want to, not the merits of rear diff protection). Look at the picture, the bottom lip being pushed rearward would would create a lot of leverage. Thats because if its mounted backwards, there is no dispursement of force like there is if it is being used for its proper application, the front differential. If you are dragging the rear differential off of a rock, while moving forward, it would probably rip the guard right off. So when I would need protection because I have to back down over rocks, I wouldn't have it anyway, because the diff guard would be in my garage in pieces fron having it ripped off because it was mounted backwards. Maybe you need to see one in person to get an understanding of the physics that are potentially involved. TAYQ: I wheel in Colorado. We have rocks..lots of them. Have at it, I'm done. |

MyktoolBox, debating is good... I have the SG front and rear diff guards. I only installed the front one because I knew that I would lose the rear one on a rock. I have to figure out a way of attaching a cable so that if it falls off I don't lose it. I understand that you don't find them useful and the point I was trying to make was that they did not manufacture them incorreclty. They were meant to be installed from behind. I completely agree with you that a pinion guard is more useful in the rear than the diff guard. Hey, if we didn't have any differences of opinions then this board would be boring. |

if I use that crap here in south florida I'll be dragging all kinds of shit behind me.. including road kill.. eheehe.. the rear diff housing is strong enough for forward movement.. what you need to cover is the rear face of it wich has a very thin metal.. so use the normal RN diff guard not that piece of junk... It didn't?! I just got one, and fit it a while ago, to my DII. It wasn't designed for a DII, with the vibration dampener, but the rockware guy suggested flatening out the plate a bit with a hammer. :-) |
