My 95 Disco (93k miles) has been overheating on the highway after 40 minutes of driving. The heater then needs to be turned on to keep it cool.

Today while replacing a hose in the cooling system, I realized that one of the two "denso" electric fans in front of the radiator was not working, even with the air on/heat on after 40 minutes at idle and a while at operating temperature. The passenger side one is the one that isn't turning. Is there a reason for this? Under what circumstances should both be blowing air into the radiator? Can this be causing my overheating?

The main fan on the water-pump is the only one that cools the Disco, as far as for running temp.

The 2 electric fans in front are for forcing air across the A/C condenser to make the system cool more efficently. They should come one when the A/C is on, or the defroster. The should be off otherwise.

If you're overheating after 40 minutes of normal highway driving, your rover has some issues. I would start by flushing the system, check the condition of hoses, and see if the radiator is partially clogged. And, try changing the thermostat. If you still have a problem, then you need to delve deeper.

Good luck,

On my 95 Disco, I remember both fans being on without the ac on During hot summer driving. Havent had any temp probs so far (knock on wood).

I have been told to replace the radiator, but wanted to see if this was the problem first.

also look between the radiator and the a/c condensor, alot of crap (God knows how it gets there) tends to gather there and causes an airflow problem.

forgive my ignorance, but the order from front of the truck towards the engine is: the two electric fans, the condensor, then the radiator?

before spending $$$$ check fan clutch. I hade overheat problems and found clutch was stuffed.Just start truck and feel how much air is being pulled by the fan, then rev it up and check again, should be heaps more.
Replaced in 10 mins and problem solved.fwiw

been told however that fan clutch is when you are overheating at idle. can anyone concur?

Jorge
mine would overheat on long climbs and higher speeds.sorry about the anon, could not remember the password.

brian:
mine is at higher speeds. cant' get a damn straight answer. One mechanic says its the radiator, another says its the fan clutch. Coolant leak test to check for head gasket came back negative but it still a posisbility.

Remove your thermostat. If it fixes the problem. Replace it. If not. Keep trying.

Worked for me two weekends ago.

Hey Jorge,

I just pulled some things out of my 95 Disco, so for FYI:

Re-cored radiator: $250 (new $800+) Mine was cooling fine, but I was changing out my timing chain and found that I had some corrosion in the cooling fins. It would only be a matter of time.

If you are overheating, it's not because of the condenser fans in the front.

If you have one condenser fan that is working, then your temp sensor is probably good. This is the wire that plugs in to the thermostat housing.

My condensor fans are intermittently working: I ordered 2 ten-inch fans from Martel Brothors (970 cfm each) at $65 per fan. The stock fans are 11-inch. Rover wants around $275 for each fan. I looked at the Spaas fans, but the cheapest I found them for was $99 each.

I have removed the old fans and took four pieces of 1/8" X 1.5" steel stock and drilled the holes where the screws are in the Radiator Support. This will be the new supports for the smaller fans, which by the way move more air than the stock ones. When the fans get in, all I have to do is drill and tap two holes in each bar where the fan mounting holes are. They should bolt right up.

The key to the whole thing is not to get a fan too thick. The "pusher" fans must fit in between the condenser and the two bars that attach diagonally behind the fans (The two bars are right behind the oil cooler, at least on my 95')

You can connect to the existing wiring, just cut the wiring off as close to the fan as possible, and use two butt connectors.

Jorge
easy way to check fan clutch.
1 start motor and let idle, lift hood and place hand behind fan(make sure you don't lose any pinkies)(need then to hold beer)
2.rev motor.should be great gust of air from fan.
if not clutch stuffed.
screw off (l/h thread) and replace.
if not sure how much air check with a motor that dont o/h. cheers brian
