Hi All, I have a 97 Disco I with two front bumber Hella 1000's (and with stock OEM battery) and due to out of town travels over the last year (without the Disco), it had only been started this winter a few times. After sitting for over 2 months this last time ( I don't plan on this happening again) it wouldn't start and although a jump got it going, the battery apparently wouldn't charge. I assume it's just the battery (not alternator) since before letting the car sit for so many months, I this I haven't had a problem with the battery. My question is I am planning to purchase either a Optima Red top or Yellow top....if the vehicle for now is only to have one battery which one would you go with? I live in the Mid-Atlantic if climate (temp) is any concern and other than the front bumper Hella's, I have no other optional equipment that would cause high battery drain. Thanks for your input. A fellow I wheel with runs an Optima blue top (marine) in his D90 and swears by it. He's got power toys galore installed and it is his only battery. I think they can withstand more vibrations, etc. Worth checking into anyway. |

Thanks for all the info, it's appreciated. I went with the red based on the fact that if ever there's a stretch of very cold weather, the red has the best cranking power. With that said, if one was running lots of electrical extras, the yellow would have been a better choice. Jay I did think about the blue because of vibration and tried to get a hold of Optima to ask if there was any reason why blue should not be used in a Disco. Alas I could not reach them and since I had to replace my dead battery, I went with Red. So far so good after I finially got the correct radio code to restart my radio. Thanks again! |

The Blue Top is the same as the Yellow top, only better post configuration and all of the posts can be used for high amp draw. I used to recomend the Blue or Yellow Tops over the Red for their deep cycling abilities but the new ones now have such lame CCA ratings that you definitely made a good choice for cold weather starting. I also know that even the Red battery will take to winching at least as well as the stock battery, so you should have no problem there. If you check another post on this board, it talks about Exide Orbital, which I think is best so far. |

Milan, I too was surprised at the relatively lame CCA ratings of the yellow top. Thats what stopped me from going with it. Guess that makes a case for two battery set up....the red for cranking and the yellow for deep cyling ability ( for accessories). The red top I now have has top posts and side posts. I assume either pair can be used for high amp draw? I'll have to look inot the Exide Orbital, sounds interesting! Thanks! |

The side posts on any OPtima cannot be used for winches, only starters. The only time I'd see the new yellow top work now, would be in dual application like you said. Though I think dual yellow would be fine if you used both for everything. I find that the CCA matters even for winching on high draw winches like the M8274 Warn. Hence my choice of Orbital for a single battery setup. My buddy found out it cranks his engine easier in the morning than the stock battery. |

Exide Orbital is kick ass, i have it on my J**p with a warn 9500. Never notice big draw of power from engine RPM. |
