Hello all, I have a 95 disco 1. I have no problems shifting from HI to LOW but I can's seem to move the shifter to the left to engage the locking Diff , any suggestions would be appreciated . Thanks Ken |

Ken,I have a '96 with the same problem, went through the whole she-bang. The rod that moves the linkage freezes up from lack of use. Some people have had success by spraying some WD-40 on the rod from below and working it back and forth, little by little. I tried that for 2 or 3 weeks with no luck, mine was so frozen up I had to remove the whole shifter box and disassemble it. I wished I had just done that to begin with, it was not that hard, and only took about 2 hours to do. My suggestion is this, slide under truck on pass-side, look up with a flashlight to the tranny tunnel. There is a long linkage bar that drops down from the side of the shift box to the transfer case. Reach up and grab that bar, see if there is any play at all. The bar pivots in the middle, if you can, try to spray some WD-40 on that pivot point and at the top where the linkage bar connects to the shaft that emerges from the shift box. Try that a couple times, spray it and then try to work the linkage., You will know pretty soon if it seems to be loosening up..If it doesn't, don't fret, worse case scenario is only a 2 or 3 hour job, pretty easy. Don't lean to hard on the shift lever, it should move pretty easy. No sense having to tear it apart AND replace the shift lever!! Good Luck!! JMcD |

You're welcome, I just did it so it is fresh in my memory, glad I could help. If the lube/wiggle/repeat method does not work, email me and I will try to walk you thru the dissasembly method. I am no brain surgeon but it was pretty easy and it works great now. Good Luck JMcD |

JMcD , Just got back from trying the wiggle method, I got in there pretty good with the WD 40 but still no movement. Looks like I'm going to have to remove and re install, Would you mind letting me know how you removed yours . (guess I'll be getting to know my Disco a little better ) thanks Ken |

Ken, do you have a service manual? If not, let me know and I can fax you the pages that show the relevant material. The most time consuming part for me was removing the center console. It is good to know how to remove it because there seems to be plenty of items that need attention in that area. Let me know if you can remove the console, that way I don't waste space explaining that process. One thing you might try before disassemble is this, Soak that shaft with liberal amounts of penetrant, let sit overnight, hit it again. Find a long prybar, it may take a while, but try to put the end of the prybar against the end of that shaft that comes out of the side of the shift box. leverage the prybar against the t-case(USE CARE,DONT DAMAGE IT) and try to push that rod IN. If it moves in a little there may be some hope that it will work free with some more Lube/wiggle/repeat. If it doesn't move, you probably will have to disassemble it. Mine didn't budge at all, it was probably never used once in its life. Shit happens. JMcD |

JMcD--- I have been following your posts about your cdl repair and they have been very helpfull. I odn't have anyproble going from hi to low or visa versa or any problem moving the lever into diff lock but my prblem is tht it seems to pop out going up mogals. It i very frustrating. I am hoping that it is just an adjustment issue but I am afraid that itight be more serious. think I willget under there tomarow night and see wat I can do. I don't really understandth mechanics of it. I will e-mail you offline Thanks so much. Brian Friend 97 se7 colorado springs co |

JMcD, I don't have a service manual , but I'll definitely be buying one. I'm going to leave it overnight for now and try again in the morning with more WD 40, and the pry bar. Ken |

WD 40 is basically worthless. Try some PB Blaster Ron |

Like JMcD, I couldn't get my to work with the WD-40 (PB Blaster) technique and I had to disassemble. I took some pictures during the procedure. If these would help any of you fix your problems let me know and I will email them to you...I don't know how to post pics here. Good Luck, jeff d. |
