Recently while traversing a downhill slippery slope I noted a lack of shudder ( the pulsing that occurs from the brakes being pumped electronically)coming from the brakes which is usually common on cars with ABS (I did have the brake pedal pushed right down to the mat) my question , is this lack of feeling normal in Rovers or is there a problem with my ABS. Suggestions on items to trouble shoot appreciated. Second question was . I noticed there is a SRS indicator located in the center of the Tachometer display. This light has never come on . Is it supposed to at start up. Could it be the bulb and if so , how do you remove the console to access it . thanks Ken |

Ken: If it was that slippery (loose dirt/gravel?) and you were mashing on the brake pedal, yes you should have felt/heard the abs kicking in - it is very obvious in our 95. If the abs did not engage due to a fault, then the "abs" light on the dash should be illuminated, indicating a fault, which then can be read by the dealer on 96 and later, or read by you using the blink code method on 95 and earlier. But since you didn't say that the abs light came on - does it come on for a test when you first start the truck? It should, as should the SRS light. If both lights are not illiminating during test, it may be something more than just a burned-out bulb or bulbs. I'll let someone else jump in here who may have replaced bulbs or troubleshot such a problem. Otherwise, it sounds like time to invest in an electrical manual to try to figure out what might link the circuits and problems (if they are linked), and/or a shop manual to see what they say about dash disassembly. Another thought about the srs light. It is easily triggered by such things as a dead battery, and some people may disconnect the light rather than pay the dealer to reset it. Is this truck new to you but preowned by someone else who may have disconnected the srs light? On third thought, such a previous owner may also have disconnected the abs light that was continuously illuminated, indicating that the abs was nonfunctional, rather than paying the dealer to diagnose. On fourth thought, there are also people who pull a fuse or do something else to disable the abs, because they don't like it. Do any of these things sound likely? Good luck John |

I am the second owner. The SRS & the ABS light do not light up at start up , I have checked what I think are all the fuses for the abs ,(engine compartment) and I don't think the previous owner would have had any reason to disconnect it . As far as I know the veh has never been driven off road and at this point the CDL is stuck from possibly never having been used. Not sure about the battery , but the truck starts great off the first turn . Ken |

John, " or read by you using the blink code method on 95 and earlier." Can you tell me more about the 'blink code method'? I have never heard of any way to check the ABS codes on ODB-I without testbook. |

Ken: I'm assuming at least some of the warning lights work? A low battery many 1,000s of miles ago could have triggered the srs light, and it would still be on now if not burned out or disconnected (only way to turn it off is to have dealer reset it). The only hint in the electrical manual is "if more than one warning light is out, check power and ground wires common to all affected warning lights. If they are ok, replace instrument cluster." Short version of how to replace lights from manual (I've never done this before): 1. position steering wheel for access 2. remove 4 screws securing instrument panel finisher 3. withdraw finisher, disconnect rheostat multiplug 4. remove 4 screws securing binnacle to fascia 5. carefully ease 2 lower panel finisher brackets downwards 6. withdraw binnacle to gain access to multiplugs 7. noting their fitted positions, disconnect multiplugs 8. remove binnacle 9. if faulty bulb is not accessible, remove screws securing circuit board and carefully ease circuit board aside 10. rotate bulb holder anti-clockwise, withdraw bulb holder and remove bulb. Good luck! John |

Dave T: Go to www.spanishtrailrovers.com/Technical_Section/Diagnosing_ABS/diagnosing_abs/html. However, that writeup is for a RR. In discos, you do not remove the relay, and the blue diagnostic connector is to the left of the steering column under the black dash panel. Also, there are more codes than are listed. You can find the others in the Technical Service Bulletin on "ABS Fault Blink Code Diagnostic Procedure" at www.alldatadiy.com if you are a subscriber ($20 per year for access to a wealth of info about your Rover). Alternately, if you come up with a different blink code, post it and maybe someone can look it up for you. Good luck John |

Only the dealer can reset it. Unless you know it's on because your battery went dead, then it's telling you something is wrong with the SRS system, and your airbags may not deploy when you need them. I recommend you go to the dealer. When our 95 had less than 500 miles on it the light came on. Turns out the first 4 or 500 95's off the assembly line had a bad SRS wiring harness. Dealer replaced ours. John |
