I've been working through a rough idle problem for a while with a lot of help from this bulletin board. Now that I have finally got a result I can pass on some advice to those still struggling. 94 Disco 3.9 Hotwire First things checked: Battery (bad) Earth Points (good) Fuel Filter (bad) Air Leak (none) Stepper motor (good) O2 sensors (bank B bad) Manifold filter (bad) After replacing or cleaning the items found bad there was a definite improvement - but I still had a rough idle problem. In desperation I traveled 600Km to a specilised Landrover wrecker and mechanic. They hooked the Disco up to a gas analyzer and noticed that every time the bad idle was apparent the engine was running rich at 0.930 and when it smoothed out the reading came right to 0.9700. The other interesting thing was that under acceleration the engine went richer then leaned out. They tried an alternative air flow meter (advantage of being a wrecker) and the reading stayed consistant at 0.9900 on idle and leaned out under acceleration. I've been running with the spare air flow meter for a week - the results are: 1)no rough idle. 2)better economy - 550Km to a tank, I was getting 400-450Km on a long run. 3)more power - I used to slow down to 80Km/h on some of the hills around here - now I can keep at 100Km/h. Sucess! Thanks to everyone that take the effort and post advice to questions asked on this BBS - if it were not for this resource I probably would have given up and sold my Disco never to buy a Landrover again. 550Km on one tank - yes please !!! How on earth do you manage that ? I get around 200 miles [320km], maybe 250 [400] if I'm lucky. Any idea what this air flow meter was they used - was it an identical replacement unit, or a non standard ? What does anyone else get in terms of miles/tank. I thought 200/250 miles was about right. |

They used a five wire unit from a wreck that had done 37000Km - same unit. A famous Rugby player in New Zealand managed to destroy all four sides of his truck - everything else was pretty much ok. |

97 D1 with 75kmiles. I get about 230-250 miles per tank in town, highway, light trail travel. I used to get 300 miles easily before 3" lift and 265/75 tires. I am hoping a change to 4.11 gears will help me regain some pep and maybe some mileage. Diesel |

Hmm, guess I am getting low mileage then. Does anyone know how I pull the fault codes from the ECU ? I read on the 'tech' section about a box with LED's under the passenger seat, but I can't see anything under there other than the changer. Thanks Matt |
