Sounds like the temp switch (on thermostat cover piece, before top hose) is shorted, or the leads to it are shorted together somewhere. Pull one off the switch and see if it stops. If so, check switch for shorted when cold - replace if so. COuld be more complicated, but check simple stuff first.

Jeff

There are three reasons why the aux fans turn on:

1.The ignition is on, and the a/c controls are on. The fans will run even if the engine is not running, but the ignitionis on.

2.There is a big coolant sensor on the thermostat housing whose only purpose is to turn on the fans when the coolant temp hits 212F. It takes less than one minute for the fans to reduce the coolant temp. Try disconnecting the switch to see if this stops the fans.

3.The ECU will turn on the fans for 10 minutes (timer) if it detects unusually high coolant and fuel temps. It will do this even if the ignition is off.

The aux fans are turned on by a relay. The relay is switched on by any one of the above conditions.

I noticed mine running after the truck was turned off just before the thermostat froze shut from corrosion. I removed the thermostat, (we can do that down here), and the problem was gone. I guess I'll put a new one on before next winter...
