Loking to get an in-dash CD player in my wife's 96 D1. Wondering if there are any issues I should take into consideration. What about the code function after you disconnect the battery? Can the guys at the local Best Buy do the install for me? Any advice appreciated!! Thanks guys!

I put a nice Sony in my '96, the prev owner had put in a pos unit with a 'flip' face that had to be removed forcibly, but after that it was a piece of cake. Wired the speakers directly to the unit, bypassed the amp. Was pretty easy, sounds much better than stock(in my opinion) Best Buy? I can't say what kind of work they do, I am sure they could do it, but might be a role of the dice as far as quality, thats just speculation though.... Good Luck.....JMcD

I just visited a Best Buy to have them look at a radio in my 97 where the PO had replaced the factory stuff with aftermarket junk that doesn't sound to great. The install tech seemed to know his stuff, knew he had to bypass the stock amp to the keep the speaker alive, dash buttons, funky sub, etc. Price to install was high too - about 4-6 hours if the job hadn't been done right first time around. Of course this Best Buy is about 5 miles from the LR dealer so he said they see a lot of Discos.

Rugger:
I went around and around with the local stereo shops who all said they could do it... Until I told them it was for a Rover.

Buy the head unit of your choice, remove old radio. Drink Guinness, cut all wires from old head unit. Hardwire new head unit in.

FWIW, I retained the factory amplifier and have had no problems.

I can walk you through it if you need help.

On an added note. Did the same in my 95 (cut the wires and got rid of the stock unit), while your at it, replace the stock speakers with Rockford-Fosgate 4" 2 ways ($79 a pair at Crutchfield). Also, make sure your radio/cd player is XM ready. Installed one in my rover a month ago and have yet to put a cd in the player since. Great sound, good music selection and coast to coast without fading. Only thing I would change is I went with the glass mount antenna. I'm gonna put the rooftop model on my wifes 97 when the time comes.

M.K.:
You need to hear the whole story...

I finally got tired of arguing with snot-nosed kids who disdained the use of heat-shrink tubing and went to the last (and only real high end) stereo shop in town. Bought a cheapie Kenwood head unit. I think the sales guy is still mad-no doubt he expected a high $ sale in a rover:-).

Went home, drank Bass Ale and installed. No sound. At this point, then girlfriend looks at me as though all of my successes have been a sham, and threatens to leave for home...

Next morning, I awaken very early and exit bed careful to not awaken aforementioned GF and run to Wal-Mart for unbalanced to balanced converter. When aforementioned GF (now wife) awakens, she comes downstairs to find me in the backyard with incense stuck in all four corners of the truck as a sacrifice to Lord Lucas! There were dead chickens littering the yard!

Shortly thereafter, she regained confidence in me as music flowed forth from the new stereo.

Were I an electronics engineer instead of an environmental engineer, I'm sure I could have messed it up even worse:-).

Did I tell you we did several 1000 mile trips with no real stereo? After that, anything is an improvement.

Peace,

Paul

Okay. Guiness and hardwiring...got it!!! Where/how do I find out what each of the wires on my LR radio are for? Does anyone have this info, or do I have to drink more and try to figure it out? Where is the amp located?
thanks a million guys, keep it coming!!

I've heard about a VW wiring harness that will match the LR harness. Does anyone have that part# or where to get one? Has anyone had any success with keeping the steering wheel controls for the stereo in relation to an aftermarket radio?

The VW wiring harness is Metra part number 70-1784. (got mine from Circuit Silly's Road Shop). You'll have to modify it slightly to work. I'll post the details after this weekend if anybody's interested. I installed mine last year, and don't remember the mod details. I'll be finishing an upgrade this weekend and will be pulling the head unit back out and will write it down this time!

I've got Sony head unit install on my 96' Disco. I also have a set of subs and and amp. Does anyone have a diagram of how to get the dash off so you can run the RCA wire from the amp to the back of the head unit.

thanks
dan

Anyone of you have the little plugs that go in the back of the stock radio?

I could really use one.

Let me know, beer/money/trade whatever you want

Dan:
The factory workshop manual is needed to remove the dash. Well, maybe not required... And if you have the manual, it runs you around the barn to do anything.

To remove the surround from the center of the dash, remove the cup tray, coin holder, etc. There are several screws holding the trim ring in, including one or two at the very top which you would have missed were it not for the workshop manual.
Getting the coin tray and clock out are the hardest parts as the fingers which hold them in place are inaccessible and you'll be frightened of breaking them.

Also, the two screws up underneath the very top, you'll need an offset screwdriver to get to them.

Good luck,
Paul
