I've got a 99 Discovery II that has coolant leaking from above the transmission somewhere. I can't see where is originating from. Has anyone got any ideas on what I should check for?

Troy,
I guess the Disco2 doesn't like coolant much. It leaked from my 2001Disco2 about 6 months ago, while it was only 3 months old. Now it is leaking again.

Had the same problem with my 95. Ended up it was leaking from a hose going through the firewall above and to the right of transmission. Check the hose connections going through the firewall, near the top, passanger side. Failing that, there is some stuff you can buy that shows up under a black light that is made for cooling systems. Dump some into the cooling system, drive a day or so then shine a black light on the engine bay. The stuff "glows" and makes it easy to trace the leak.

Other possibilities:
1) thermostat housing seal at front of engine - runs backwards along intake manifold valley, drips onto tranny, runs down and drips off bottom of tranny (happened to our 95)
2) intake manifold gasket
3) rear of head gasket (ouch!)

This is my first LR, but I have lots of experience with British cars (yeah I know that voids my comments as intelligent). Anyway, I have seen small anti-freeze leaks turn in very large overheating problems which turn into major engine problems. I watch my temp gauge like a hawk, and treat any escaping fluid as an emergency. Have seen many horror stories on the disco2owners board regarding overheating D2s. Just encouraging swift attention no matter how small the leak.

My leaked from the intake manifold gasket. I tighten up all the bolts with a torque wrench and fix the problem. I can remember what exactly I torque them to.. 20-25 ft/lbs?? Small drips right on the transmission housing.

Hope that helps
