By the time you can tell you need lube in your driveshafts, it's probably too late.

As far as I know, there is no scheduled time to grease your u-joints; it really depends on your driving style. If you off-road every weekend in lots of water, then you should probably do it every week. I add a little grease (add until clean grease oozes out of the center of the ujoint) about once a month.

Thanks,
Mike B.

I grease all the nipples I can find at every other oil change.

>I grease all the nipples I can find at every other oil change.

When I tried that I found I got a rash!!

Just kidding...that's a good idea. If you've been in water or lots of mud, it's a good idea to crawl underneath and regrease once you get home.

Marc:
On a Standard Disco series one, there are Five grease zerks for the driveshafts/U-joints. Three u-joints and two for the driveshafts.

Inject grease into the u-joints until the grease is just visible oozing out of the bearing cups. Anymore, you risk damaging the u-joint and the excess will just be flung onto the underside of your truck, insuring that mud doesn't stick well!

For the front driveshaft, inject grease into the zerk until you see grease begin to ooze out of the gap at the front u-joint. There is a little rubber plug in the end of the driveshaft, around which, the grease is supposed to ooze.

For the rear driveshaft, inject grease until the rubber boot around the splined shaft begins to swell. I would not suggest injecting it until it begins to ooze out from around the boot as the boot can be popped off of its groove and it isn't the easiest to put back on, even with the driveshaft removed from the truck.

if you have any difficulty injecting grease into the driveshafts, you can unscrew the zerks and inject the grease directly. I found my zerks to have been rusted shut, necessitating major intervention to adequately grease the shafts.

As for frequency of greasing, if you had the problems I had with my front driveshaft, you would do as I do and grease all of them every oil change. I change my oil every three thousand miles, about once a month for me. But, I do a lot of highway driving and then, a lot of 'wheeling.

Good luck, hope it helps you.

Peace,
Paul

So, what type of grease do you use and where do you get some? Do you need a grease gun?

I personally use a synthetic marine grade grease and a cheap, small grease gun that I bought at Wal-Mart. The grease gun has lasted through five-ten grease cartridge changes-I've gotten my money's worth.

The synthetic marine grade greases supposedly are less susceptible to the issues with water ingress. I originally bought the grease gun to grease trailer spindles (had one seize up at 75 MPH! Now, I grease trailer spindles at every fueling stop). Now that I have a real 4X4, I use the same thought process (without the frequency) on my Rover.

If somebody has a better grease, I would gladly consider it if it is as easily available as my Wal-Mart across the street.

I will soon have tie rod ends with zerks that I intend to grease on the same frequency. To prove my anal retention index, I rotate my tires every 3,000 miles too, weather and wife permitting.

I use Mobil 1 Synthetic Universal Grease. Works great, and is easily available at most places that carry Mobil 1 motor oils. It has EP additives and is suitable for use in bearings. I use this grease for the u-joints, driveshafts, tie-rod ends (with grease fittings), and wheel bearings. I still use white lithium grease for door strikers, door hinges, and the latch for the hood.
