my certified warranty is about to expire. I have had a leak for the last few months, so I took it my 95 Disco to the dealer and it appears I have a leak at the rear main seal.

I know the transmission has to come out to fix the seal, and it is typically a very expensive fix. The insurance adjuster for the warranty carrier is coming tomorrow to approve the job. Any reason he wopuld not approve it?

Also, is this a recurrent problem? I have heard that once it is fixed the first time it usually is fixed for good. True?

Any other concerns or things to watch for?

BTW, my dealer (Cape Fear) is EXCELLENT to deal with, so I am not worried about them. If they have any say-so, it will be handled as well as possible.

Thanks,
Marc

Mark,

beware - they will go great lengths claiming that it's not a leak, but a seep, and therefore not covered by the warranty. THat's a total bullshit, and the seep will turn into the leak, sooner or later. Do whatever you can to have it fixed. I have never managed to get my dealer to do it under LR Certified Warranty. It is a big bucks job, sooner or later.

I tried to be persistent 'cause my poor Disco has been wet there since ~60kmi age.

Good luck,

Peter

They should approve it. Could also "just" be the cross seals. either way they should do both and if they don't tell you say you will pay the extra $5 for the cross seal parts and have them put them in.

Generaly, in order for an ext service contract to cover the crosses, there needs to be a complaint for a leak from the oilpan as well. To do the Rmain seal alone, the pan does not need to be dropped, but for crosses it does.

There you go.

cross seals are often mistaken for rear mains. I guess you don't have to take the pan and thing that the crosses sit in to change a rear main.

Anyway, make sure it is the rear main not the crosses.

About a year ago, while getting an oil change, I was notified that my rear main was seeping. A year later and its starting to drip a little, two or three drips over night. I was thinking about getting it fixed. What kind of $$$ am I looking at to get it fixed?

Thanks,
Jeff

Thanks for the input, guys. I checked with my dealer tech and was told they always replace the crosses when they do a rear main.
I think we must have a really good dealer. They seem to focus on the customer a lot more than some of the others I hear about.
