Rather than pay the $940 (or $1,500 if you include engine oil,p/s,a/t and fuel injection flushes), I'm going to try and do the 60k disco1 service myself. I'll be armed with a haynes manual, maintenance schedule checklist and some very knowlegeable friends (they were mechanics while puting themselves through college, but no rover experience). Any hints? Suggestions on where to get parts. Upgrades. Insults? |

Go for it! My Hayns manual has been helpful for service. (and service only) If you run into any questions, there are plenty of us armed with Ffactory shop manuals eager to help. |

So is this 60k maintenence REQUIRED?.. will a rover die without it? That's a boatload of cash for a dealer to do it, and i'm not too "mechanical" |

I you can turn a wrench you can do damn near everything on the 60k. I took a rank beginner through one on a D90 and it was a piece of cake. And nothing on the 60k is required. You only need to do it if you want your truck to work. Rovers require maintenance be done, and not only at convenient intervals. If you don't want to maintain it, and you don't want to pay the dealer, you'd better get rid of it now because you'll hate it. But that goes for any truck that goes off-road. Wheeling a truck regularly just about triples the maintenance. Anyone got a copy hand of the general service schedule vs the severe service schedule? -P |

I'm gearing up to do the same thing. My 95 is ready for its 60K service, now that it has 78K miles on it. I think you'll be just fine doing it yourself. I'm not too worried, and I've never done much work on cars in the past. One really good tip that someone posted...When getting ready to drain and fill (anything), open the fill hole first, because if you drain something (a differential, for example) and can't fill it back up, you're screwed. |

I'm going to do the Transmission Filter in the next week or so and read the write up noted above and have just one question. Do you have to lower the exhaust to do the job on a Disco or is that only on a D90? I would go outside and look but I don't feel like crawling under there in a puddle, as it raining hard. Thanks |

Unfortunately, exhaust gets dropped on all models. -P |

I am finishing up on my 60K service. Now if I were to do it again and if I could have just one thing done by somebody else I would definitely choose the transmission filter replacement. I will never forget lying under the truck, trying to balance the hi-lift jack between the frame rails with my left hand while desperately trying to pump the jack with my other hand... |

Eugene: How bad was this. I plan on replacing all the fluids this weekend and the trans filter. Is it worth paying a shop 200 to do this? |

Since I don't trust the grease monkeys at the stealership to do things right, I'll try to do as much as I can myself on the 60K service and want to use the absolute best parts and fluids available. So, going through my trusty LR "Passport to Service" booklet, for a '95 Disco 5-speed what are the best brands & sources for: Spark Plugs Distributor Cap & Rotor Anti-Freeze Power Steering Fluid Brake Fluid Manual Gearbox Oil (I read somewhere here that Redline MTF is good -- where can I get it?) Transfer Box Oil Front & Rear "Axle Oil" (I take it they mean F&R differential oil) Swivel Pin Housing Oil Prop shaft grease Also, seems I read on here a while back that there are thermostats available with a "safety valve" so they open up when they fail instead of closing down and cooking the motor -- where would I find these? Any other suggestions? Thanks for the input, Norm |

> Is it worth paying a shop 200 to do this? It depends. If it is $200 for changing both all the fluids and the filter and if the shop is trusted and if you don't have a friend to help you when spreading the frame when I would go for it. It's just too much for a single person to hold the jack, to pump the jack and to bang on a cross-member all at the same time. From the other hand, I did it with no help. So anybody else can ;) |
