Land Rover 4.0 GEMS motors are not the only pushrod V8s prone to this problem. Most of the EFI V8s used by the various sterndrive manufacturers have had this exact same problem. Their answer was/is not valve jobs but an array of proprietary products designed to vaporize in the combustion process and dissolve the carbon deposits. So when my 4.0SE started first experiencing stuck valve symptoms last year I decided to follow their lead and adapt their process to my Rover. The basic idea is the same with all of the products get the motor up to operating temperature and spray a pint or so of cleaner into the intake tract while the motor is idling. You let it soak overnight and test, repeat if necessary. The best product of the bunch is OMC "Engine Tuner" now also sold as Systematched "Engine Tuner" since OMC went broke and Bombardier bought the assets. If you are going to try this on your rover there are some caveats: You must remove the Y pipe. These products are not safe for Oxygen sensors or Catalytic converters. You must introduce the product downstream of the Mass airflow sensor. You should not do this directly on your driveway, the dissolved carbonblack that sprays out of the exhaust manifolds stains. You will need to be able to reset OBD2 codes the ECU will notice the Oxygen sensors are not responding and trip the check engine light. You must change your oil after you are done. Some product is going to seep past your rings while it is soaking and while it is safe for all seals it is a poor lubricant. This process will cost you a weekend and $50-100 provided you don't break any exhaust studs I have been directly involved in treating four 4.0 liter powered Rovers all with complete success. Also update your ECU if the dealer says you can otherwise you are going to be right back where you started. The sterndrive manufacturers also produce preventative products the best deal of which seems to be Yamaha marine "Ring Free" now "Ring and Valve Free" on some packages. This product is certifed as Oxygen sensor and Catalytic converter friendly for their new motors that incorporate both. |

I'm thinking about doing this fix. How do I reset OBD2 codes. Is that something that I will need to go to the dealership for? |

nah. many local shops or even a pep boys have an OBD II code reader and they can clear the code. i have heard of these systems where they actually "clean" the top of the motor. you hook it up to this machine and "flush" the system. anyone used this yet? kinda like douching your truck. very reputable shops in my town have told me about it. JE. i have used a similar producted by Amsoil which you can use upsteam of the mass flow sensor. hard to say if it worked. i also used some BG44K a few days later and after cycling my service engine light is off. i am having new rockers put on next week and i will take a look in there and see how things look. won't be able to see much though |
