http://www.discoweb.org/mar2001/index.htm scroll down. The damage to the steelie was fixed in 2 minutes with a sledge hammer. On an alloy it would have been junk. Ron |

Well, when you wheel a lot, $250+ per wheel for alloy vs $65+ per steel, the cost advantage for the steels is clear. |

Ron, Once you have damage like that on a steel wheel, can you trust it's truly fixed and "true" again, or is that damage in an area that it doesn't really affect the function of the wheel? In other words, does that spot affect keeping air in the tire or the roll of the tire at all? Karen |

The wheel may not be actually "true", but you can generally bend/fix the edge of steel wheels enough to hold air. Depending on the extent of the damage, you may or may not want to trust it on the highway, but on a trail it'll be fine. Troy |

Its held air fine. So sure. Really we should be running tubes but even without them no problems. If you really beat them they get tough to balance and vibe but I have not gotton to that point yet. Ron |

The alloys give to a degree and dont pinch or make creaselike bends, so they still hold air. If you hit it REALLY hard, they will crack and be unserviceable. What do SCORE trophy trucks use at 150+mph flying across baja, let me tell you, its not made of steel. (Though they do have a larger budget for repair parts then I do...) I've never had a problem, though my dedicated trail rig (SJ413) runs steel, just because it came with them factory. My Castors will be fine and when I crack one someday, they are cheap in the junkyards ($50-65 all day www.car-parts.com) Just my 1/50th of a Euro... |

"Well, when you wheel a lot, $250+ per wheel for alloy vs $65+ per steel, the cost advantage for the steels is clear." Did I screw up? My steels were 155 each plus shipping + 30$ each for powder coating. I only got 100 each for my alloys! |

Bryan, it depends if you bought the LR steels or the American Racing ones like GBR and RoverX both sell for under $75 each. The LR steels will be more so maybe you didnt. Karen, while the trusting a steel that has bent and been banged back might be a valid concern, you at least have that option with the steels unlike the alloys. Roger, you would be surprised just how un-tough the LR alloys are. It doesnt not take too much to start breaking edges off them and it took suprisingly little effort to bend mine not only on the outter bead but also on the inner bead. Just enough to never hold air again. Chris von C |

Interesting stuff, and something I can actually understand around here (G). I often read every word of a thead and yet only understand half of it. So much to learn..... Karen |

The Discovery 1 spares - do they have the same offset as the alloys (stock)? Seems like these might be the best choice for a set of steel wheels. I've found a couple for $50 here and there, and most have never been used, still mounted to the back of someone's totalled D1. Any thoughts? e |

those D1 spares on the back are made by Dunlop. take a look and you will see a small Dunlop logo. i have never heard anything bad about those wheels. i just like the look of the NATO's.......i mean it is all about looks right? |

whatever impresses the ladies i guess is a better way to term it. and if that includes imbibing a few beers.....then so be it!! monday morning and beer are just not working for me right now. give me a few hours. i mean i can now use such lines as: "i believe in the peace process so much that I went and bought some NATO wheels for my truck,......so how about we head back to your place?" "kelly.....your eyes are so deep and beautiful.....they remind me of my NATO wheels." "would you like to see my NATO?"
in all seriousness i am not really sure why i like them......a mix between what people have said here. i just don't want to have to worry about my alloys on the trail for whatever reason. i feel an obligation to keep the alloys looking good if i keep them on there. i am just not sure if i can deal with that kind of pressure!!! some of it has to do with looks and much of it has to do with being more practical. so this is not to mean that steels are better.....they certainly are not in all cases.....just like anything else it all depends on what your objective is. |

Refering to the post by RON on Saturday, showing the dented rim... When wheeling, do the alloys dent as easily as the steel ones? I was just wondering because I was in an accident where my alloy was hit dead on (T-bone), and it's fine. I threw it on back as a spare because insurance bought me a new one - but the alloy seems to be a LOT more durable than the steel rim. |

Patrick, The alloys are strong, but more brittle. They resist bending a lot more than the more malleable steel. When the stress on the alloy gets too much, it breaks instead of bending. And, it's not field-repairable. -L |

But theoretically, the stresses of wheeling wouldn't bend an alloy as quickly as steel. So why would anyone want to downgrade? |

Alloys will bend also before they break (depending on how you hit 'em of course) - they just are harder to repair. I recently bent the inner bead on a stock LR alloy, but then it cost me $75.00 to have it fixed and rebalanced (obviously not on the trail) Bill |

True, the alloy will take more before breaking, what would bend a steelie before that point. But it's not a "downgrade".... if you don't have an "Oh Crap!" moment, the steelies will be fine. And, if you have a BIG "Oh Crap!" moment, the steelie is easier to fix in the field. AND if its an even bigger "Oh Crap!" moment, then you toss the steelie and buy another. To be honest, I think the Disco steelie is a great looking wheel. I like it better than castor or deep-dish alloys... I like my tornado wheels, though, so I'm not swapping them, but, it makes a heck of a lot of sense to use the Disco spare wheels for a second set of rubber.... IMHO, FWIW.... -L |

garrett. american racing does not make a steel wheel that fits a D1. this is what i have been told by them and many of their retailers. personally i like the NATO wheel better. i am not sure about which wheel is actually better though. american racing makes them to fit a D2 though. tire rack and others (GCR) sell them for the D2. |

There is a picture of American Racing Wheels on a Disco I at the link below. It is the GCR site. http://www.gulfcoastrovers.com/rovers/arwhl/15x7/index.htm |

gp, amercian racing does make rims for the D1. They discontinued many of them and it seems the "nugget" ones are only available thru GCR. I have no idea how they got that deal but they did. The NATO wheel is a whole lot tougher. Even though it's about .5" narrower than the ARE rim it weighs almost 5lbs more. |

interesting. i have been in contact with them as well as sears, pep boys and others only to hear "they don't make it for your truck". but knew the D2 had a different offset and they are available. not a huge fan of american racing wheels. had some 'wagon wheels' on a j**p i had years ago and they sure do rust quickly and bad. sure they are a little better now, but still dig the NATO much more. ps: now that i see you are talking about 15" wheels.........i have been talking about 16" ones. drrrr. oops. so do they make a 16"? |

they used to make 4 or 5 different types, all listed on their website. but something changed and now only gcr carries the "nugget" in 15*7,15*8, and 16*7. if you contact any other distributor they will all say you cannot get them for the D1. |

FWIW, i've been through two sets of AR steelies on my jeep, still have one, and i have one made by Unique that i bought from Rover Accessories (thanks Ho). i like "wagon wheel" look better than more nato-stylish Unique wheels, but the latter are by far stronger. Not a scratch or ding on them yet in a year and half. peter p.s. they were $75 a pop (vs $24 a pop for AR black wagon wheels) |

I have the 16" AR Steelies on my D1. I bought them from Gulf Coast Rovers. They take a lot of abuse (that used to scratch the hell out of my aluminum rims). Also, they are so cheap that I don't worry about ruining them ($61.00 vs $255). I'd post a picture, but the 50K limit on pictures is a big PIA. Head to www.discocrazy.org to see pictures on my D1. Look under the Vehicle Mods section. Thanks, Mike B. |

That wheel is thick as are all genuine LR wheels. Alyssa knocked the tire off the bead and then landed HARD on a rock with just the rim so it bent. Ron |
