My 96 Disco has a very intermittent problem. Happens about once a month or so. I go to start it and it idles super rough to the point of stalling, put it in gear and it dies. If you rev it a bit it smoothes out some and will not stall. After about 30-45 seconds it seems to come good again. The interesting thing is no fault light comes on. Anyone have any ideas what is going on? Id like to narrow the problem before replacing things. Thanks for the help. Trevor |

I would suspect flooding. This could be caused by a faulty coolant temp sensor, which is cheap and easy to replace. Or one ove your injectors may be leaking a little. You could try removing your spark plugs when the engine is stone cold...then check for strong gasoline odor at each cylinder. Randall |

Randall, I'll look at these things this week. Just curious as to why these wouldn't cause the fault light to show? Shouldn't the ECU sense the flooding? Trevor |

Not sure flooding is really the right word. If there is just a small leakage then it would not set off alarms, but might cause a problem on startup. The CUX type ECU has a tendency to overfuel on cold start ups, so a small fault could create "flooding". Cold start up problems can be caused by the coolant temp sensor. Hot start up problems can be caused by the fuel temp sensor. These two sensors look identical. Randall |

This is exactly what I had. I posted the fix just recently. IT was related with running rich in that the Mass Air Flow sensor was faulty - when the rough idle came in the engine was running rich - when the idle smoothed out the engine was running right. The other things I noticed was poor economy and reduction in power. There are a few other things to check as well. Battery Earth Points O2 sensors Air leaks after the Mass Air Flow Sensor Fuel Filter Plenum chamber ventilation ducts Crankcase breather Stepper Motor Good Luck |
