I have OME MD rear springs on my 1998 Disco. I need to replace my rear shocks and I would like to improve my articulation by adding a pair of longer traveling shocks. Any recommendations or ideas? I know I will have to get new brake lines, anything else I need to consider. At what point will the springs unseat? blah blah...

Thanks

Well then, If you don't want to mess with brakelines, retainers, drop kits etc.. then OME shocks will add (a little) longer legs to your ride.

The spring will unseat when it reaches
it's free length, about 16". You can test this by puting the chassis on stands. Remove the wheels and undo one end of the shocks. Then lower the axle with your jack until the springs unseat. Then measure the distance between the shock mounts. This distance would be the ideal extended length for shocks with your springs.

The OME shock will only add 1/2" at most. Unfortunately there is not a longer travel shock for the rear which simply bolts into place. Your choices are:

Add a 2" extension to the shock which will give you 2" more drop, but will require new bump stops. I think the expedition exchange website has an article on extensions.

Buy Rancho, Bilstein 5000 or some other long travel shock which will require new upper, and probably new lower mounts.

I would put extensions on...test...then decide on shocks and mounts.

"The OME shock will only add 1/2" at most."

This is not correct. The OME N44 shocks are 1" longer at full extension than the rear Woodheads, so they give at least 1" more drop than the Woodheads. I say "at least" because the rear shocks tilt forward from bottom to top. This tilting gives even more drop than if the shock were perfectly vertical. Somebody did the math once on how much extra drop is provided by the tiling shocks. I think it was 1.3 or 1.6 or something to that effect. I can't recall the exact number. Whatever the exact number is, it is definitely greater than "1". Multiply that number by the 1" longer OME rear shock, and the total amount of drop gained is certainly longer than 1/2".

"Unfortunately there is not a longer travel shock for the rear which simply bolts into place."

There is the N25 shock. This is the rear shock for the leaf-spung hi-cap Nissan Patrol. The dimensions of this shock are very nearly ideal, and the shock features the eyelet top and stud bottom mounts. Here are some pics:

The shorter shock in those pics is the N44 OME shock. As you can see in the second pic, the N25 is about 3" longer than the N44 at full extension. At full compression, the N44 is slightly less than 1.5" longer than the N44.

While the N25 bolts right onto the factory shock mounts, Ho and I thought the valving on it was too soft.

The N-25s work well with heavy rated springs but I wouldnt try em on anything with a rate lower then 320-340 or so..

I was looking over the $G website, and it seems to ellude that there is a FOX 2.0 Pro series shock that will fit with no mods? Am I smoking crack?

"These Fox hand-built, nitro-charged shocks are customized to each specific Land Rover vehicle and weight, eliminating "bucking" in the rear of the vehicle and allowing for a considerably more comfortable ride on any driving surface. This shock system also provides a bolt on approach in an extended travel shock front and rear, a first in the aftermarket shock industry for Rovers. "

Safarigard...

I dont know, I am just curious

Yes I did. The rear Stage II shocks will mount on the rear stock LR mounts. They make just as much noise as the Stage IIIs did though and I havent had a chance to get them off road to see how they do yet since I put them on.

I dont know if they will sell the shocks without the kit.

Dirt? You think I spent all this $$ on that truck to go get it dirty? Good grief man, get a hold of yourself. I could spill my Latte.

Oh, the humanity of it all.
