Hey Everyone, check this out... http://www.off-road.com/jeep/reviews/percys/index.html

I got off the phone with the manufacturer and they are considering making windshields for D1's and D2's. The pricing would be competitive with the OEM windshield, but you would get a much improved product.
Highlights include:
Scratch Resistant
Rock Resistant
Bullet Resistant (.22)
Shatterproof
About 50% lighter than glass
Repels water superbly
Water beads up in rain providing impressive visibility
Excellent all-around optical clarity
Is easily cleaned with common window cleaners
Windshield wipers glide over it
Offered in larger than stock thickness

The sales rep is looking for opinions from rover owners and a retailer to buy an initial run of 10 windshields to get things going. If you have a retailer in mind or just want to give your opinion please post your thoughts here and email them to the maker.

I'll take one too. I've had my truck 3.5 years and am on my 5th windshield, I have to guess these can last longer than 6 months!

Al

I'm assuming the windshields are made of glass coated Lexan(polycarbonate). Not sure if this would be legal or safe due to scratching. This material would be scratch resistant, but deinately all sctrached up after a year.

I've made a lot of Lexan winshield for race cars here in NC, but they only use them a dozen times, then put on a new one.

well if you have questions or concerns please check with the maker. the speedglass is not lexan, read the review because i think many questions will be answered. it is much more scratch resistant than lexan. but let the maker know your concerns and opinions, i'm sure they will appreciate it.

If the manufacturer is serious, they ought to donate one to the good folks at EE for "testing". If it passes, EE could then stock them and distribute them to the rest of us. Just a thought.

OK...so I went back and read the review, not just the original posting. Don't mean to burst anyones bubble hear, just stating the facts. Lexan is General Electric's trade name for polycarbonate. So for almost all applications Lexan and polycarbonate are the same material. And scratch resistant polycarbonate will scratch, and have to be replaced. This may be acceptable for dedicated trail rigs, but not for a street driven vehicle.

I'm probably one of the most weight consious persons on the BBS, and I own a plastics company myself. You won't see me making any windshields for the RR. Interesting idea though.

I guess im not seeing the significance of saying a scratch resistant windshield will scratch.

Isnt the point here that glass ones are breaking and chipping? Maybe you mean they will scratch from trees, brushes? And therefore become so scratched that you will replace it?

However if you mean they will scratch from a rock or debris, ill take that anyday over what my glasswindshield does..

Richard,

you'll see the wipers' streaks on your windshield in a couple of months.
ever had your scratch-resistant sunglasses fall under your feet in a car?

not to mention if you are in a wreck you might want a relativly forgiving windshield.
