Hey all, I don't know about D1's, but D2's have a nifty feature of their torque converter: They lock, or try to, above 35 MPH.

I look at this as a really neat way of saving energy at freeway speeds. I've learned to help the system lock, by taking my foot off the gas at high speeds, until I see the tach kind of 'click' into position. Then, as long as I don't floor it, or stop, the engine is locked to the drive shaft, and I'm not wasting 20% of my power heating up tranny fluid.

Ok, here's my question: Is there a better way of "helping" the locking mechanism? And, the big one: I want a little red/green light somewhere on the dash to tell me when the converter is locked, so I know for sure, and as a little reminder on long trips to lock it. How feasable is this? Is it electronicaly sense'able at all?

Thanks,
Erik G. Burrows

And could you switch it to a manual lock? And could this be used to jump start the truck like a manual tranny. My friend's Mercedes has an auot but it has some feature so you can bump start it. Cool feature.

Can't answer the hypotheticals, but the D1 locks up at about 52-54 mph, but only if you are in 4th gear (overdrive). It unlocks when you drop below about that speed, and I believe it remains locked when you accelerate, as long as the transmission doesn't kick down into 3rd.

Not sure about 35mph, shop manual says it's dependent on throttle position, engine speed, mode and range. "Unique lock-up maps...are incorporated for all forward gears". Sounds like code for "expensive programmers". Obviously there's an EAT ECU control, but I can't see how to get to it other than ODBII.

Did you know that you also have a "Mechanical Limp Home" mode?

Sure 'nuf: "...the gearbox is fixed in 4th if fault occurs while moving or 3rd if the vehicle is stationary. 3rd is also selected if the vehicle is stopped and the selector is moved out of D and then back into D. Neutral and Reverse are also available."

I don't know about the series 2 box, but whilst my series 1 box was having a bearing replaced it received a simple modification so that it now locks above 84 kph in 3rd gear also. It's great for holding speed up long hills ! Also, the lock-up point can be altered quite easily by machining one of the valves. Sorry, I don't have any technical info.
