My ABS brakes are really sensitive and sometimes activate under normal conditions. Is there a way to adjust the sensitivity or clean the sensors.

Norm-
One of the sensors or sensor harnesses is bad. Sometimes they will cause the ABS to be Hyper-sensitive. Are you getting an ABS light?

Mine was doing the same thing with no light for a while, then the light came on, and viola! No ABS at all. Not sure how to check them yourself, we have a hand-held unit here at the dealer to clear and check stored ABS codes.
Anyone?

It could just be a loose sensor, too. I had the same symptoms, reseated each one, and the ABS behaved normal again. It's worth a try.

My 97 did the same thing until the light finally came on for good. Turned out to be a bad speed sensor that cleaned me out of $500 plus installation.

Take a rubber mallet and start tapping 'em.

I just had my front bads replaced on 96 Discovery. While the vehicle was at shop, ny mechanic called and told me that both front hubs were loose. he suggested repacking the bearings and adjusting. I told him to do it.

When I got the vehicle back the ABS light would sometimes stay on and would also go in ABS mode on dry pavement. prior to work all was fine.

Any suggestions as to what happened and how to rectify short of a $500 repair as mentioned above?

Arthur - ABS sensors got disturbed. Just reseat them by hand (push down firmly) - back the truck up for 10ft or so and the sensors will self gap, then just drive and light should extinguish within a mile or so.

If this doesn't work -you may have to pull the sensors up a bit before reseating. Hopefully this will do it for you.

On my '97 the Anti-lock warning light stays on. I tried pushing all 4 down gently with a hammer. Nothing. Then, I had read someplace that the Load relay is malfunctioned. I might try to put in a new relay. But how does one "re-seat" the sensors? I know one must be careful particularly on the wires. Is there a right and easy way to do it? thanks

Hi Bill

Thanks for the response. Could you give me some insight in to exactly how to reseat the sensors? Do I have to pull the wheels to do this?

Arthur:

All I've ever found necessary is to push down on the sensors by hand. Grab it where the wiring enters and just push. The fronts are easy to get to with the wheels still on - just turn to full lock for easier access.

I have the same problem after getting new brakes, I think one of mine is loose, the light comes on, I reset them then after driving a few days the light comes back on or after hitting a big bump in the road. How would one tighten them?

Mike - the brass bushing in the top of the swivel pin may need to be replaced. There are fingers cut into the bushing that protrude into the ID of the hole. If those fingers weaken and don't exert much outward force anymore, then the sensor could slip easily.

I think the workshop manual even says to always replace the bushings when changing the sensors. No one actually does most likely, but that's probably the cause.

Hi Bill

I've gone out and tried to push in the area where the harness comes in the knukle (on the top) on each side. It did not appear that anything was loose or moved, except the plastic around the wires.

This was after I put back the 5 amp fuse in the circuit.

I started the vehicle, backed up and drove forward. the ABS light went out, but when stopping on dry pavement from 15 MPH the ABS engaged. This happens both in forward and reverse. I've removed the 5 amp fuse again pending any other suggestions since it's safer to drive without the ABS the one that doesn't work

Probably truly a bad sensor then somewhere - hard part is figurng out which one.

Did you try reseating the rears sensors to JIC?
you will need a long drift to reach through the dust shield and push (still by hand - no hammers) The rear sensors go in sideways as opposed to onm top.
