What's the recommended break in routine for the DII. My first DII I broke in on a 1000 mile road trip, and it never had any problems. with my new DII what should i do. thanks

I can't tell you for sure, I just know I drive carefully in general, and during the break-in I was pretty conservative. Tried not to go much over 2000 rpms for the first 1000 miles. We changed our oil at 1000 miles and again at about 3000. I took it in for the recall fixes today, and the service guy thought I was insane to have changed the oil that often. I didn't care what he thought :)

Actually, a long trip on the highway is the worst thing you can do to a new engine. You should vary your speed often. You should also be very sure not to brake hard unless necessary. That is pretty much it. It is a good idea to do an oil change at 1,000 miles just in case any small metal particles got loose in the engine. After that, just drive normal.

p.s. Karen, oil changes every 3,000 miles is absolutly unnecessary for routine driving. The 3,000 mile thing is a ploy by the oil change places to get your money. 7,500 miles is more than adequate unless you are doing some serious off roading or towing.

Oil changes being as cheap as they are, and even cheaper if you do it yourself, I think its wise to do it every 3K.. what will it hurt?

Curt,

The reccomended 7500 mile oil change is not likely what is best for the engine. It is what the automakers are having to say to meet new EPA regs. I am not sure what the EPA regs are, but the reccomended oil change interval on most new cars is 7500 normal and 5000 hard.

You are correct in that oil will not break down considerably for well over 5000 miles, but that is not the main concern. Foreign particles (dirt, metal) and contaminants are the big worry. I do enough dirt driving that my oil resembles watery chocolate after 3K anyway. As Richard said above - it does not hurt anything.
