Does anybody add any addatives to their oil. And if so what are the benefits?

Good oil doesn't need additives.

While Perrone has a good point.. I'm inclined to believe that for heavy duty ie Trucking Industry fleet managers swear by Lucas oil additives. I'm not sure how many Disco owners put their trucks to that extreme of uses but IMHO it can't hurt.

Benefits I'm not too sure about but a quick search on Lucas might yield a site or two.

Alex,

You may want to look into this a little further. A big rig's diesel is a different beast that a little gas powered bugger. The wrong additive can be bad for some seals and can gunk up pans. Big rigs have much more rigorous maintenance schedules also. Most oils these days have plenty of the right additives right out of the bottle.

I put some Lucas in my 260k/miles rear diff (not a rover, but a 533i) that the dealer said was shot. It's now half as quiet and is still working. Maybe I just won't hear it going bad now, but it's cheaper than a new rear diff. We also put some in a 93 Mazda Protege (140k miles) just for grins. No more clicking valves when cold.

Is this the Lucas Oil Stabilizer I see in the local autoparts place? Lucas makes a fuel treatment product, a transmission treatment and this "oil stablizer" stuff. Is this the stuff you speak of?

Ron:
Me? Yeah, I used the oil stabilizer (got it at NAPA). My rear diff was very noticable above 50mph. Dealer said it was shot and that I need to spend $3400 for a new one in a 1983 vehicle. Yeah, right. I guess what he was really saying was, "...come on up and check out our new vehicles..." Fuck him, never do that again. Other local guy said just change the gear oil and try the Lucas and see what happens. Changed out the oil, replaced with 50/50 90wt/Lucas, now the diff is much quieter at high speeds. The car never goes more than 90 miles from home, so it'll take me a while to put some miles on it.

I put lucas in my disco

both diffs and the transfercase

the transfercase makes much less noise

I'v been using lucas in car and trucks for a long long time

theres a reason lucas sells so much of the stuff to truckers

it works!

is it gonna fix broken parts hell no

but it will make parts wear slower and it will also allow you to run very worn parts much longer

i'v thrown it in so many noisey diffs with great results, I think it well worth its cost

it even silenced a volvo diff with over 300k on it!

as far as all good oils having good additive packages, thats not really true. some oils due have them , but any oil marked "formulated for smaller higher reving motors" or "made for high performance 4 & 6 cylinder motors" most likely have very small amounts of additives.

the oils with big additive packages where not working well in these motors due to foaming and other high load oil breakdown conditions. so the oil companys backed off on some of the additives to make them work better.
