"Stop everything and read this!"

"Every Rover Owner should know about the danger of using the wrong brake fluid. Please be sure to use only Castrol Brake Fluid in both your clutch and brake systems to prevent seal failures. The DOT 3-4 rating has nothing to do with the fluid's compatibility with your Rover's hydraulic system. If you take your Rover to a local shop for repair, insist on Castrol Brake Fluid. Better yet, buy it direct from us and bring it with you (Item# 2501) pint, (Item# 2521) quart."

Is this true or what??????????

Castrol's LMA/Girling was a vegetable-based brake-fluid. It was used in Series Land Rovers for years. If you drain the stuff out, then refilled with a 'modern' brake-fluid, other than an LMA fluid, then the rubber seals in the system would break up and your brakes would fail.

Any of the LRNA post-'87 Rovers should be fine.

DOT3 versus DOT4 is only a performance specification in regards to temp. range, compressibility, etc., and has nothing to do with composition.

My manual (for a '99 Disco) says that any universal brake fluid that complies with "FMVSS 116 DOT4" or having a minimum boiling point of 500deg F is fine.

I have been using Valvoline synthetic brake fluid for a while now. "I'm not dead yet!"
