I have a 97 Disco with 65k miles on it. Over the last year, over $5k has been spent fixing oil leaks. No damage, just parts & labor to stop the leak. This has included:

3/01
Front crank seal
rear main seal
oil pan gasket
head gaskets
steering gear box
$3500

3/02
rear pinion seal
oil cooler lines
valve gaskets
Transfer Case Input Seal
$1700

Is this normal? Thank gosh for my extended warranty that has picked up most of the costs. Should I ditch the car when the warranty goes out b/c there is no way in hell that I would pay this out with my own money. Accept for the 1st 6months, 7k miles, I have been the only owner and the car has not really had any other problems. Oh, I'm going to try to do the oil cooler lines on my own (while doing the 60k svc), the extened warranty doesnt cover it and they wanted $400+. Has anyone done this before?
Thanks for the input.

Chris:
Your experience sounds almost identical to our 95 at 65k miles, except our warranty is out and several things are still leaking. I think you'll find lots of discussion on this board and others by people who have had all of the things you've had repaired. But they are such capable trucks! We're going to keep ours as long as we can keep it running by adding fluids and replacing seals when it becomes necessary as opposed to when the drips on the floor become an aggravation.

Haven't personally done the oil cooler lines - our warranty covered it (I think it has to do with whether you call it a hose or a pipe).

Good luck with your soul searching.

This is the well-known Land Rover chassis lubrication system ...........when the leaking stops, you know it's time to add oil .........

Josh,
Thanks for the reminder. I also need to replace the p/s lines as well as the oil cooler! Surely our informed board has some hints and suggestions on how to do this! :)

John: Thanks for the info. Misery loves company? :)

pipe oil-cooler hoses, been there done that. they run about $40 or so, www.roverconnection.com...

i thought mine was leaking from the diff. but it was the hose dripping onto the diff., thank God.

all rovers leak in some way, some fashion, it's a fact, it's like the motor mount for the window or the clock light going out, it's going to happen. you gotta love rovers to keep them.
