OK, here it is. Sorry for the delay, but the weather and work prevented me from getting this info any sooner. Let me know if you have any questions. As a postscript, please note that I did move some of the wires around to make their colors and nomenclature match their actual use. Just use a small (jeweler's) screwdriver to unlock the pins from the plug and move them where needed. Let me know if you have any questions!

OK, someone e-mailed me and said they couldn't read my previous diagram because it was too small. Here's a slightly larger one...

Where do you get this VW wiring harness? For what model and year is the harness for? Todd |

Has anyone been successful with an after market receiver (head unit) and the controls on the steering wheel? |

The VW harness adaptor that I used is Metra p/n 70-1784 (Volkswagen 1987-up). I bought mine at Circuit City. As far as using the steering wheel controls on an aftermarket receiver, on a Disco I the switches are just momentary, normally open switches. If you wanted to go through the trouble of opening up your aftermarket receiver (and voiding any warranty you may have), you could tie these into the receivers front panel buttons. The better approach would be to use an aftermarket head unit that comes with a remote control and modify the remote to tie into the Disco's controls. David |

Modify the remote to fit the buttons? |

Yeah, you'd have to basically canibalize (sp?) your remote so that you could solder some wires in to tie the Disco's switches into the remote's switch contacts. You'd also have to relocate the IR emitter LED from the remote to somewhere that your head unit could see it. Not something I'd recommend to your average DIYer. Just an idea. David |

I wasn't going to say anything but, I agree about being lazy... At least with the Disco's binnacle controls. I find it harder to use those than to just use the radios buttons. I have been in a vehicle with controls actually mounted on the steering wheel and found them usefull. Anyway, they asked, so I gave a solution... David |

I just installed a new radio. The four 3 inch speakers in my 98 Dico I sound sooooooo weak and shallow and my rear woofers don't work at all! I haven't had a radio since I bought this rig 6 months ago. Now I have something but it sounds so annoying. Secondly, the stock radio had 2 antenna looking wires but I didn't know which to use on the new radio so I tried both and I still don't have fm reception!! I would have thought an expensive luxory SUV would have come with sweet sounding stock speakers. |

I have a suggestion...rewire the whole thing! I just put an aftermarket system in my SI consisting of amps, caps, mid/tweet set, subs, accuvolt, etc...and rewiring was the easiest. Plus, when you sell it you can simply pop your factory back into place. Not to mention no one makes a wiring harness adaptor for Land Rovers! I repeat NO ONE As for the remote issue...Pioneer(and others) sell head units with the ability to work with factory steeringwheel remotes. If you want an antenna to work with aftermarket radios go to Radio Shack and purchase an antenna that mounts inside of your dash. Trust me it works fine. |

The factory radio uses a diversity antenna system (two antennas). When you install an aftermarket radio, you just need to use one. There is a small booster amp for each antenna located in the trim right below each Alpine window. All you need to do is get an adaptor to convert the factory antenna lead to the standard "Motorola" connector that your new radio uses. Late model Volkswagens use the same type of connector so they're easy to find (I got mine at Circuit City). Real simple to do. Just plug one of the antenna leads from behind the radio (pick one, it doesn't matter which one) into the adaptor, then plug the other ind of the adaptor into your new radio. |

I would have thought an expensive luxory SUV would LOL.... a) It's British b) It's a Rover c) Did you know that a Jeep Grand Cherokee costs a HECK of a lot more in England than an "average" Land Rover Discovery? It's only "exotic" because it's made elsewhere, and expensive because it's hyped... The truth is, it's a leaky British 4x4 built to go in rough places. FWIW... -L |

I thought I saw somewhere that someone had bought an extra steering wheel mount cruise control unit switch and adapted that to do the volume, which is mounted much better then the dash ones.. |
