Just found out my left front side marker (on bumper/spoiler) has a bad socket and needs to be replaced. Naturally, I called the dealer and asked if they had a replacement in stock. They said it would be $70 somethin' for a repair kit (socket with ~1 foot wire, crimp connectors, yada, yada, yada...) OUCH! There must be a better (cheaper) way! Any ideas? The socket itself is toast. Corroded beyond jury-rigging. I'd like to find a "factory like" fix, but not 70 bucks for a $3 part! Maybe I need to offer a sacrifice to the Lucas gods??? David |

I'm betting since that is a standard bulb, you could find the matching socket in any autoparts store - maybe in the cheesy "Help" stuff all of them stock. (cheesy - but helpful on occaison ) Bill |

I checked the "HELP" and electrical sections at Pep Boys, Auto Zone, etc. Nothing even close. I'll check Discount Rovers... David |

Also, try a junk yard. Try Rover Land here in Tampa, FL. They are in the phone book. Thanks, Mike B. |

OK, here's the update... Not wanting to wait for mail order (I found out about the bad socket during my state inspection and got a REJECT sticker, so it needed fixing ASAP), I started looking at the bad socket and figured out a "fix". What I ended up doing is buying one of those wedge base bulb sockets that goes in the dash of most cars and robbing the contacts out of it. I soldered a pigtail wire on each and bent them to fit into the Disco's original socket. Then I used some liquid tape and "potted" the backside, soldered the pigtails to the factory harness, and then heat-shrinked everything. I even found a new O-ring to replace the one that was missing around the light socket where it meets the lense housing. Turned out pretty decent if I do say so myself! It'll definitely last longer than the last person's attempt (apparently, it had been replaced before). Let me know if anyone needs more details (socket part number, etc.) David |
