Duh....
I know it's not oil but the crap inside of my rearview mirror started leaking out all of the sudden. It was a sticky black liquid that I am assuming played a major role in self dimming my mirror at night. Now the mirror looks like shit when I look in it.

Is there anything I can do besides buy a new one??
Has this happened to anyone else??

Garrett #2,

Check the archives, it's a common event on circa '96 Discos...

Yes, it's a mirror replacement. You can either get a new one of the same type, or switch to a non-self-dimming model if you prefer.

That fluid is corrosive - don't get it on your dashboard

Also - you can buy an OEM style mirror from the manufacturer, Donnelly

warning - not cheap :)

mine leaked out over a year ago and i still have yet to get a new one. jc whitney sells 'cheap' ones. around $100........but i would just opt for the manual dimmer. $20 and no worries again.

I wish mine would leak so it would be usable! Instead I have screwed-up mirror with a wave of fluid at the bottom. Anyone know how I could remove the oil myself, besides breaking the mirror.

HUMMMMM a corrosive liquid leaking all over and perhaps on the passengers. Anybody a lawyer! Free replacements for everybody. It should be a freaking safety recall!

Ooouuuwww! It burns! I need a million dollars! It would make the burn feel much better! (Hey, if a stupid lady can sue Mickey D's by being clumsey and spilling hot coffee on herself and DUH, getting burned, WHY NOT?) Count me in! smilie

Let's get a recall started!
Go fill out this form and lets get the ball rolling.

Or you can just get one of these and spend about $30-40...

Here's the front
my picture
you get a wider field of view then the stock one

This is the back, the four 'arms' kind of grab on to the existing rear view mirror

The mirrors come in different sizes, but the longer ones kind of interfere with the sun visors.

Just a friendly nitpick on the "stupid coffee lady" comment. I know that this case is commonly referred to as an example of an outrageous lawsuit, but the facts of the case are much different than the public thinks.

Some facts:
The woman did NOT place the coffee between her legs, it spilled when she was trying to remove the lid. She also was not driving the car, she was in the passenger seat.

The McDonald's in question had recieved several complaints that they were serving their coffee too hot, in fact they were serving coffee 40 degrees hotter than the McDonald's manual recommends.

The woman received 3rd degree burns, was hospitalized for eight days and required skin grafts to cover the burned tissue. These were not slight burns.

Originally, the woman only wanted $11,000 dollars, enough to cover her medical bills. McDonald's refused to pay.

The woman was found to be 20% at fault in the case and her award was reduced by that amount.

20% at fault?! If I spilled a glass of red wine on my white Dockers and stained them permanently, at what percentage am I at fault? 100%! OK, granted the coffee was too hot, and for that McDonald's needs to be corrected, but the fact remains that if the woman had been careful, she would have realized that the coffee was too hot to drink (or spill on your lap). Unless you're from New England and drink ice coffee, coffee is always served "hot". I'll agree to disagree on this one. I'm just a bit on the conservative side, and get a little frustrated when I hear about people getting large sums of money for what appears to be their clumsiness. Thanks for the facts, though.

" Unless you're from New England and drink ice coffee, coffee is always served 'hot'"

True, but there is a difference between 'hot' and 'so fucking hot that it causes 3rd degree burns within 2 seconds of contact', which is what the Mcdonald's coffee did.

Anyway, just wanted to point out that there is more to the story. I am also "on the conservative side" and don't like to see people rewarded for stupidity or carelessness.

Who the hell cares about the facts of the case... as long as her rear-view mirror still works, I have no sympathy for the lady.
Now then, back to the REAL question....
How to drain the nasty fluid out of the mirror before it leaks and ruins my dashboard.
Any body have some ideas?
