I have a 96 Disco SD bought used in winter here in Chicago. It ran a little rough during that first winter even after a tune up . The check engine light kept coming on , delear diagnostics showed several cylinders misfiring and suggested valve problems at a $2,000 plus fix. I snooped and after compression tests and further checks at other dealers this was not a problem. spring came and the rough running turned into a bucking when the engine came up to full running temperature, but not until, and the exhaust smelled "gassy" as if a mixture was too rich. This bucking would disappear when the engine was gunned or a foot taken off the accelerator but would reappear again quite fast. I've seen many reports from owners of 96 SDs who have experienced this condition without remedy and I've heard everything about what this problem might be but no-one has given me a definitive answer that has solved it. The last report I saw was that this model Disco had been installed with valve guides made from a metal that when heated slightly over expanded the guide diameter and thus grabbed the valve causing this problem. Any ideas - serious ones - welcomed immediately. email [email protected], Michael Freeman Thanks |
