How do you remove the inside paneling of the drivers door on a 97 disco? I'm trying to get to the locking mech. so I can spray some WD-40 (to hopefully cure the non-locking status of my door). Any advice? -Chase 97Disco |

The door panels just pop right off. Remove the 2 screws for the inside door handle and the one for the door latch. Using a Trim Removal Tool ($13.00 at Pep Boys, Discount Auto Parts, NAPA, etc) or a stiff putty knife, gently pry the door panel off. There is a sheet of plastic over the door to prevent vapor/air leaks. Just pull it off gently. Use duct tape to reinstall the barrier. That's it. Good Luck, Mike B. |

Mike, you sound like you have done this before, imagine that? You forgot to mention that he should go by dealer and get a handful, 10 or so, of the plastic doorpanel rivet-inserts that will break in the process of removal. |

I removed the rear door panel on my '97. I only broke the rivets I tried to pop out with a hammer, a wrecking bar, and a big screwdriver. Once the trim removal tool was purchased, no more rivets were broken. Don't bother with a stout putty knife, imo. |

Why remove the panel. Just spray WD40 down the locking mechanism push button and into the lock catch on side of the door. Use the 'straw' and insert as far as possible. |

Speaking of locks... the guys at the shop gave me some grief the other day when they noticed that my 97 English made Land Rover had GM door locks.. Big nasty GM logo on the black part of the lock in the door.. Anyone care to explain why my truck has had US parts used in it... Im not happy about this..!!! |

Richard: CD/Stereo/radio is by Pioneer, depending upon year. The tires are often, England, may be US. The bulbs, Philips, of Netherlands, paint by various European mfgrs. Bosch elec is German, (UK plants though) Relays: Siemens,-German I believe. ZF trans, Swiss co. Then we put on US made: shocks, sometimes Australian perhaps OMEmu, tires, bumpers, winches, Japanese spkr and sound, Garmin GPS (USA), German Bilsteins, etc. Might as well have ONLY door-latch GM, thank god that's 'bout it from 'Generous Motors'. |

As LR had the ability to make few of their own parts, many of the assemblies come from other manufacturers. Domestic manufacturers are doing the same and realizing significant cost savings. Some domestic manufacturers have even sold off their own plants to tier one suppliers. As for the limited number of GM parts in our vehicles, don't be so quick to stop counting as you will find many more. As for complaining about this being the case, keep in mind that in these cases, parts are available at far lower cost because we CAN go into our local parts house and find identical parts- IAC valves, fuel pumps, oil filters, etc. Paul |

You may watnt to try spraying some silicone in the opening before you go to all that trouble. The spray silicone comes in a can like the WD40. You may have to ask at a hardware store or your auto parts place. The advantage is that the silicone wont "gum up" like the wd40 does (in case you have to work on it later). |
